Guest guest
Some information is missing and I would appreciate knowing it. Perhaps we don't agree with the legal case, or the laws, sometimes, but we should know what the charges are before we critique them. Are we to believe that the charge against these people is " speaking out " ? How can we show support when we don't know what we're supporting? Please advise. Guest guest
Well I spent a couple hours last night researching the case, and it's hard to get the facts on what exactly happened. Because the issue is so polarizing it's hard to get a good non-biased account on what these guys did. As much as I can surmise, they were harassing some UC Berkeley professors who were using live animals for testing. (Obviously, accounts vary on the amount of harassment.) But apparently there's a special federal law regarding this type of animal activism/terrorism, as if our legal system weren't patch-work enough. Why this is different from normal harassment, who knows? Unfortunately I can't get enough details on the case to decide whether I'd protest this or not. If anything, I'd protest the fact that such a federal law exists.- Brian On Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 3:07 PM, CyberBrook <brook wrote: Some information is missing and I would appreciate knowing it. Guest guest
There are what called disparagement laws in effect in about 13 states so far (I did a paper on the laws, actually). The mad push for them started when Oprah criticized the beef industry and when it was discovered that Washington apples were covered in a carcinogen spray to make them shiny. After that, food conglomerates pushed to make it unlawful to criticize food choices, etc thereby effectively preventing anyone speaking out against eating animals "meat", for instance (food products-and you can easily thwart/diminish the ethical core of vegetarianism, i.e. the inalienable rights of animals, into where you criticizing a mere "food product"). The conglomerates engage in S.L.A.P. lawsuits, an acronym stands for strategic litigation against public (participation). They are meant to extend the legal battle as long as possible in order to drain a defendant of finances, emotions, etc-to basically force them to give up. brookCC: From: brian.molnarDate: Tue, 17 Mar 2009 10:01:55 -0700Re: Re:San Jose Protest This Thursday - Sympthetic Vegetarians Needed!
