vegan mattress in SF/SFBA?

Hi All, Years ago I bought Macy's most inexpensive extra firm mattress, because it was the only vegan one: no silk, wool, etc. It's falling apart and I need another one. It must be vegan, it must be extra firm, and preferably of good quality and earth friendly. I need a mattress only because I have a platform bed with wood slats that go immediately under the mattress. I'm in San Francisco but would be willing to purchase from any place in the SF Bay Area. Does anybody know of good vegan mattresses and places to purchase them? I'd very much appreciate any information. Thanks so much. Lisa

Hi Lisa,

I found a store in Santa Cruz called Greenspace which offers several

eco-friendly mattresses, including an all-cotton one from Vivetique

which unfortunately you need a prescription to buy because it contains

no toxic fire-retardant chemicals and thus does not meet Federal fire

safety regulations. Vivetique also carries mattresses made of 100%

natural latex foam, " Pure Grow Wool " (basically organic wool -- the

sheep are treated humanely, fed organic feed, etc., though they're

obviously still being exploited for their wool), certified organic

cotton, and water-based glue. These mattresses contain no toxic

fire-retardant chemicals (I got confirmation of this in writing from

Vivetique) but they do meet the Federal fire regulations due to the

way they're constructed using (naturally fire retardant) wool.

Mattresses from Macy's, Sleep Train, etc., are impregnated with high

levels of toxic fire-retardant chemicals including boric acid and

PBDEs. Memory foam, for example, is one of the most highly flammable

foams in existence (firefighters call it " solid gasoline " ), and thus

is highly impregnated with toxic chemicals. Mattress manufacturers do

not need to disclose what fire retardant chemicals they use. See the

book Toxic Bedrooms for more info:

Best wishes,

Hi All, re the mattress question. Thanks for the responses, private and in the group I've received so far. Please keep them coming.I live in an apartment building so I do feel obligated to get a fire retardant mattress. Nobody smokes and the bed is nowhere near a heater, but the building is old wood and I wouldn't want to be responsible for making any fire spread more quickly.

I wouldn't use any wool no matter how the animals were supposedly treated. Just fyi. But, everyone who's responded has given me at least one possible option.

I'd love a place in/near San Francisco than would deliver and pick up the old mattress, and a place (vs. the internet) where I could try out one for myself. Thanks everybody.
