Guest guest
Mary Jo Rice <mjrice Sat, 18 Jul 2009 15:20:34 -0700 Hello to my dolphin-loving circle, THE MOVIE “THE COVE”: Can you help? (Volunteer at a local theater and you can take home 100% organic cotton Save Japan Dolphins t-shirt and cap by EcoJoia.) Dear Friends of Dolphins: In the next weeks in theaters around the United States—and this fall in theaters around the world—a powerful and highly praised documentary on the work of our Save Japan Dolphins Coalition, featuring Coalition marine specialist and activist Ric O’Barry, will open. Information about screenings can be found at: http://thecovemovie.com/festivals/upcoming_screenings.htm “The Cove” is an intense and inspiring experience. It received standing ovations in various film festival circuit theaters. It received the Audience Award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, and has so far garnered further Audience Awards at the Hot Docs Film Festival in Toronto, the Newport Film Festival, the Nantucket Fest, the Sydney International Film Festival, Galway, Ireland Film Festival, Maui Film Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival, plus Best of Festival at the Blue Ocean Film Festival. We expect worldwide publicity for the film as it opens. The Save Japan Dolphins Coalition needs your help to end the slaughter of dolphins and whales in Japan. Our particular focus is on the drive fishery for dolphins in Taiji, the largest remaining annual slaughter of dolphins on the planet. Louie Psihoyos and the Oceanic Preservation Society made the film. Also working with the Save Japan Dolphins Coalition is Participant Media of Los Angeles, to promote the film and especially to promote the campaign. Please join us in getting the word out about “The Cove” and intensifying the campaign to end the Japan dolphin and whale slaughter. “The Cove” will premiere in New York City and Los Angeles the weekend of July 31, and in dozens of cities across the U.S. beginning the following weekend. In the Bay Area, premieres are scheduled for August 7, for the Shattuck Theater in Berkeley, Embarcadero Cinema Center in San Francisco, and for the San Rafael Film Center in Marin. Volunteers are needed opening weekend at all theaters to pass out postcards and gather email addresses, and at as many subsequent screenings as possible. Can you volunteer? Can you help us recruit individuals who will commit to a minimum of a 4-hour shift on behalf of Japan’s dolphins? We are also looking for a volunteer “Cove Captain” who will serve as principal coordinator for each theater. Any leads would be appreciated. If you can volunteer, please contact me at the email address, below. Also, we’d appreciate if you would tell your friends to visit: http://www.savejapandolphins.org/ for more info about the campaign, action to take, and to view the exciting new trailer for this multi-award-winning movie. Donations are key to our being able to expand efforts in Japan. There are three key online letters that we hope everyone will send. These are important aspects of our action plan and are very easy for people to do online. Let's get the number of letters sent way up! We feel that we can stop this slaughter with your grassroots help. Thanks for activating and spreading the word. We are very grateful. Guest guest
There was an article in sfgate about the launch of this documentary about dolphin slaughter for Japanese consumption. It's playing in Berkeley, San Francisco, San Jose and Menlo Park .. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/07/31/PKMN18PAHQ.DTL See SFBAVEG archives for Kate's orignal email with more details - /message/16944 - asking for volunteers to pass out information. I don't know what info it is, but looking at the savethedolphins.org website, I don't think they are promoting veg as a way to stop dolphin slaughter. You can comment on the sfgate article .. maybe even think about pro-veg leafleting at the film screenings?? The issue of harming/exploiting animals for profit is not indigenous to Japan .. Cheers,Tammy My two cents, vegan-style .. - today or read it on GenerationV.org
Guest guest
Whoops, wrong URL. It is the http://savejapandolphins.org/ that is asking for volunteers and has the list of things to do to help dolphins on their website. There is a 'savethedolphins.org' website but that's an entirely different organization. Guest guest
There are two groups who produced post cards for distribution at The Cove screenings. Participant Media is the Doc filmmaker’s PR co and they have a card that asks you to go to their web site http://www.takepart.com/thecove. They also have as one of their actions to take is “learn which types of fish are safest for you to eat.” The other group is the http://www.SaveJapanDolphins.org coalition which is made up of Earth Island Institute, Animal Welfare Institute, Elsa Nature Conservancy of Japan, In Defense of Animals, Campaign Whale of the UK and Ocean Care of Switzerland. Though their postcard does not ask you to learn which fish are safe to eat they also do not promote a vegetarian diet. I brought the issue up (the issue of asking folks to learn which fish are safe to eat on the one postcard) with the coalition coordinators. That is when they told me whose postcards were produced by whom. They also gave me the option not to have volunteers at the Rafael Theatre hand out the PR Company post cards which is what I will be doing – only handing out the coalition postcards which ask folks to go to their website, sign the one click letter to Obama, Biden and the Embassy of Japan, donate to raise funds to show the film in Japan and take the pledge not to visit aquariums with marine mammals in captivity or to swim with dolphins tourist programs. If anyone is interested in volunteering at The Rafael theatre in San Rafael please contact me. For all animals and earth, Kate x
