Guest guest
Hi all Bay Area Vegetarians' Food for Thought book club is meeting on Sunday 8/9 @ 1:00 PM to discuss The Case for Animal Rights by Tom Regan. The discussion will take place at Loving Hut restaurant in San Francisco (http://bayareaveg.org/ug/display.htm?id=878). Newcomers are always welcome! Please use the link below to RSVP. http://bayareaveg.org/events.htm?EID=2117#2117 A note on the book: It can be tough to get through The Case for Animal Rights if you're new to this type of material. Feel free to come even if you haven't made it all the way through the book. The foundation for what remains unique about Regan's contribution starts in Chapter 4. If you're not particularly interested in philosophical arguments regarding animal cognition you can skip ahead to Chapter 4 and Regan's overall argument will remain in tact. Regan is an excellent writer and teacher. Coming away from this book you'll have a good understanding of the major approaches to normative ethics (e.g., contractarianism, egoism, utilitarianism, Kant's view of rights) and Regan's solid criticisms of them, as well as a thorough understanding Regan's own position regarding the rights view. Happy reading, and I look forward to the discussion. Cheers, Mike
