Guest guest
I heard a rumor a few days ago that New World Vegetarian was closing down because Tamarindo next door was expanding into the space. I was shocked, I thought they had to be wrong. Well, I just called the restaurant, and the person answering the phone said that the owner of the building has ended the lease, and there was nothing New World Vegetarian could do to keep it. WTF!!??!! That is totally screwed up. I guess there is no " tenant's rights " for businesses. Anyway, according to what the employee on the phone told me, they will be in business until the end of August 2009. As if to try to make me feel better, the employee said they do have another restaurant in Point Richmond. But they do not have any plans to open up another restaurant here in downtown Oakland. The employee said they would like to, but it's too difficult to find the right kind of commercial space with rents that they can afford. I'm so sad this place is leaving. I don't drive, and I work in Oakland and live in SF, so it's only once in a blue moon that I wind up in Point Richmond (I have been there, Pt. Richmond is truly lovely, it's just way off the beaten track for me). I'm so sad. I'm going to try to go to New World Vegetarian as many days as possible before they close and invite everyone I know. Guest guest
Looks like Symphonie is the name of the restaurant in Point Richmond, which is owned by the New World Vegetarian folks. I figured out the name when THIS (link) came up on the google searches I was doing. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/595975 I checked the Ultimate Guide, and YES! It's already in there! GOOD JOB, Bay Area Vegetarians! http://bayareaveg.org/ug/display.htm?id=912 Looks like Symphonie has a very similar menu to Oakland's NWV, so my favorite restaurant will not be lost forever; I'll just need to do more work to get there, but it will be worth it! Guest guest
The closing of New World is a loss. Here is the link to all of the related vegan restaurants (including the Loving Huts). http://www.suprememastertv.com/vegetarian-restaurants/ Claire Wylde Rachel Donovan <racheldonovan Sent: Friday, July 24, 2009 12:43:07 AM Re: Oakland's New World Vegetarian is CLOSING, August 2009 Looks like Symphonie is the name of the restaurant in Point Richmond, which is owned by the New World Vegetarian folks.I figured out the name when THIS (link) came up on the google searches I was doing.http://chowhound. chow.com/ topics/595975I checked the Ultimate Guide, and YES! Guest guest
Hi Rachel!I ate at Symphonie when they first opened. It's a nice place--really big, with lots of parking. Food is very similar to New World. Like most new restaurants, they need our business to survive! This is very sad news about New World. We're having a group dinner at New World on Wednesday night August 12, after protesting opening night of Ringling Circus at the Oakland Coliseum. Guess we'll enjoy it all the more now! Thanks for the updates.
