i just went with a friend of mine to buy organic petfood for her dog

at a place called animal house in san francisco. i was excited to find

that they sell meat free dog " bones " there and told my friend i wanted

to buy her dog one. the owner overheard me and yells across the store,

" is your dog vegan? " and i said " no my friend's dog is not a vegan,

but i am " and she said loudly and righteously " good because dogs are

not meant to be and its really not our place to make those choices for

our pets. if you want to be vegan fine, but its just wrong to do that

to a dog. " i said " dogs can live a very long and healthy life as

vegans and i know many dogs who do. " and she got louder and said " show

me one dog in the wild that doesn't eat meat. forcing your dog to be

vegan is just selfish " and i said " and do you think its fair to kill

other animals so that our dogs can eat them when they can be perfectly

healthy and happy on a vegan diet? " this went back and forth and many

customers overheard our debating and her tone was so infuriating that

i just said " look, we obviously feel very differently about this and

im happy to agree to disagree and leave it at that. " what's so

upsetting is that animal house advertises themselves as being an

organic healthy dog food store and im sure many conscious people shop

there and potentially get persuaded by her terrible advice. i want to

send her literature or something. any suggestions?

Hi Joelle,Alicia Silverstone has a bunch of vegan dogs and has done many interviews (with pictures) of her dogs, who eat V-Dog, I believe. PETA Times (the magazine) featured her with her dogs last year (maybe the spring issue?). You are correct that many dogs live long and healthful lives on vegan diets, but it does not work for every breed of dog. I am an ethical vegan, and last year rescued two retired racing greyhounds, one from a track in Colorado and one from Kansas City. Unfortunately for me (and them) their bodies just did not tolerate it (they came off the track eating 4-D meat, very disgusting stuff).Warmest wishes,Cay Snow--- On Fri, 7/24/09, Joelle Katcher <joellesk wrote:Joelle Katcher <joellesk grrrrr....."BAV mail list" Friday, July 24, 2009, 3:30 PM

I don't know about raising dogs on vegan food,

but I do know that our dogs lived to a ripe

old age of around 16-18 on an ovo-lacto-vegetarian

diet (i.e. vegetarian + eggs + milk).

And speaking of dogs: here's a photo that

made me smile:

i've known plenty of dogs who live very happy and healthy lives on a vegan diet.

V-Dog is quite the dog food. in fact, it being vegan and all,

i've been known to munch on it myself a bit from time to time. < =

....though i have a preference for the vegan dog biscuits.

lol.

all true.
