I know a few of you have been emailing about Daiya Cheese at Rainbow. Gordon

left me a VM. They will be getting mozzarella cheese tonight in bulk and pre

packaging into tubs for individual sale. They should hit the shelves tomorrow.

I have had this vegan cheese...oh my! You better leave some for me. :)

cheers

(pls post this quickly)

I have FIVE 20% off Rainbow coupons to give to my veggie " friends "

I can meet you today anytime from 4-6:00pm. If you're late I can leave it at my

friend's door step at 18th Street.

I might be at an outdoor movie from 8pm on..

===

On Thursday I can be in the area from 10am-2pm

The best time to shop is Thursday mornings; after the Wednesday 20% off crowd

rush passed.

At Rainbow, checkout Lines #2 and #6 is the fastest cause you can choose TWO

registers to go to. It's faster than the EXPRESS 12 items or less line. All

other registers you can only go to ONE register.

==

Berkeley, folks, If you ask, I'm sure Berkeley Bowl will eventually stock up on

this item.

I personally love vegan cheese, but I rather buy an apple than a $10 tub of

cheese. This is just my personal preference. I hope the cheese will be more

affordable in the near future.

Speaking of Rainbow coupons: the coupons don't say " do not copy "

or " no photocopies allowed " . So is it legal to photocopy

these coupons (even on a color copier)?

Any legal eagles on this list care to comment?

PS: I have coupons for myself. I was just thinking about

spreading the love.

Legal or not, I'm not sure that ripping off the only place to buy Daiya cheese within 500 miles of here is in our best interest. We're not talking about one of those supposedly evil "big corporations" here. This is a small, local and very veg-friendly co-op. If we mass-produce their coupons and put them out of business, then we'll all be fighting over the last block of past-the-sell-by-date GMO tofu at Safeway. :-) Just a thought.wpSent from my iPhoneOn Sep 16, 2009, at 11:17 AM, Ajay <ajayboots wrote:

I was asking about the legality of it, not the morality.

If you're worried about ripping them off, then I'm sure

you won't use more than 1 coupon per month, since that's

what theoretically each person should have (1 per phonebook,

1 phonebook per dwelling). But like many others, I raided

the phonebooks of neighbors who threw them out for the Rainbow

coupons.

Actually, I never use any of the coupons. If I did, as you say, I

wouldn't use them more often than Rainbow intended.

I also wouldn't go there with a truck in the middle of the night,

smash a window and carry out as much as I could before the cops

arrived (even if I could get away with it). But that's just me.

I wasn't making a moral argument, though. I was making a practical

one. If you put Rainbow out of business, we WON'T HAVE RAINBOW any

more. See how that works? It has nothing to do with what is legal or

what is moral, but what is in our mutual best interest.

Even if you don't put them out of business but you force them to raise

their prices to cover the losses your counterfeit coupons are

creating, everyone in the community will be forced to pay more because

you didn't want to pay your share.

I don't think a few counterfeit coupons would put Rainbow out of

business or even force them to raise their prices. Rainbow is a

robust, healthy business that can afford to swallow some loss.

What it would do, however, is create bad will at Rainbow, and they

would respond by clamping down or canceling the coupon program. That's

a bad option for their lower income shoppers who rely on coupon days.

Also, the idea of doing anything to rip off Rainbow fills me with

revulsion down to my very core. They are truly one of the few

businesses out there that does everything right or would die trying.

People, I'm not talking about ripping anybody off.

Nor am I talking about stealing.

Least of all, at Rainbow, where I shop regularly.

It was a question of legality.

For example: legally, gift cards can't expire in California.

So even if the merchant says that the gift card expired,

you are within your rights, as a resident of California,

to use an expired gift card.

Take a look at the Rainbow coupons. It doesn't saw " copies

are not allowed " . Most other coupons will explicitly say

that copying is not allowed. So naturally, the question arises.

If it is **legal** to make a copy of the coupon, then

the question of counterfeiting does not arise, since a counterfeit

is by definition ILLEGAL. Is that clear?

So the question was: is it legal to make copies? If you

do not know the answer, please don't waste my time and yours

by accusing others of stealing, counterfeiting, etc.

Thank you.

It sounds like you didn't read past the first paragraph of my post!

I went on to say that the more likely outcome would be that Rainbow

would cancel their coupon program, which would be bad for everyone,

and I ended the post by pointing out that it's basically evil to cheat

a business like Rainbow.

My disagreement was with the idea that Rainbow would go under, which

they wouldn't. I think there's a much stronger argument against making

fake coupons, which is that it could compel Rainbow to cancel the

program. That would be bad for everyone.
