Pleather Sofa?

Hey Folks:

I want to buy a pleather/PVC sofa, and have been dismayed to find that leather

has gotten so cheap now that it is hard to find substitutes. I'm willing to pay

more to get something water resistant that isn't the skin of a dead animal.

Anyone have any good idea on sources for PVC sofas? Ikea doesn't seem to have

them.

Thanks,

Mila

Instead of PVC, I would like to recommend microsuede (a non-animal

manufactured material), which is available at most furniture

retailers. While nothing manufactured is ever perfect, PVC is one of

the most poisonous materials on earth, and undoubtedly contributes to

habitat loss.

Ikea is one of the many companies that has phased out PVC. For more

information:

Mila,

Echo Furniture in SF/Noe Valley sells some affordable couches that are made of

" leather textile " -- which is not leather. I don't know if it is PVC or not;

maybe a cotton/poly blend?

This is their website:

Hi Mila,

I've been recently shopping for a vegan sofa bed. I will definitely ck out Echo

Furniture in Noe Valley. We got our natural organic vegan bed from The Futon

Shop on Cesar Chavez, and I was so excited to be buying local, but we had a bad

experience with those guys. So for our sofa bed, I've gone back to the evil I

know ... online shopping. (Ironic that I feel I can trust online shopping more

than these local guys.) I'd much rather be buying local, of course, so I'm

very excited to ck out Echo. Also, I'd like to avoid PVC, too. Great

suggestion about microsuede .. I've got a microsuede fabric sofa at home that I

really like. Hmmm, some of things I've been looking at online, may have PVC in

them .... hmmm, if I get microsuede instead of pleather/leatherette, maybe I can

avoid this.

Well, in case you're interested, Mila, here are some of my faves from my online

search (some of which may have PVC):

Thanks to all for the post and replies on this topic, since I've been shopping

for the same thing!

Echo Furniture is great, I highly recommend going in there. The owner

is very helpful, and has made me some prices I couldn't find matched

anywhere else, not even online.

For mattresses, if you're looking for something natural or organic,

but a futon isn't your speed (or if you'd like to check out some other

options), I highly recommend Keetsa:

http://keetsa.com/

They have a showroom in SF on 9th Street, and they're a local Bay Area

company. What's really interesting about their mattresses is how they

compress them into a suitcase sized box, so you could actually take a

king sized mattress home with you on the bus. (Not exaggerating.) I

personally own a Tempur-Pedic, but Keeta is easily more comfortable,

much less expensive, and far less toxic.

(And of course, I'm not affiliated with any of the businesses in this

email.)

Thanks for all the suggestions, I will definitely check them out. I should do

my homework -- put are PVC and pleather synonymous? Or is there non-PVC

pleather?

I have a microsuede sofa right now, but my rabbit has taken a liking to

" marking " it, hence the desire for something water-proof.

Thanks again,

Mila

PVC is the material itself, while " pleather " is more of a nickname. If

something is fake leather, you'll still have to read the labels. PVC

is the same as vinyl, and not all fake leathers are made from the same

materials.

" No PVC for me " and " no vinyl and that's final " . All you need to

remember.

Don't forget, leather production is still very toxic. So don't feel

like you're making a trade-off between animal rights and the

environment. Leather is bad for both the environment and the animals.

PVC is bad for the environment, which is indirectly bad for animals

(habitat loss, poison leaching into water and food supplies, etc) but

still bad. There are plenty of other synthetics that aren't perfect

but much better than leather and PVC.
