Hi Alex,

I haven't tried it myself, but I e-mailed the Cheese Buyer at Rainbow Grocery in

San Francisco. He said he has already sampled these wheat-free, soy-free,

oatmeal-based cheesy dips and spreads. He said Rainbow is planning to have them

on the shelves in 2 weeks.

We Can't Say It's Cheese Spreads and Dips by Wayfare Foods.

From the web site, it's wheat-free, soy-free vegan cheese and sour cream, mostly

made out of oatmeal, coconut oil, beans, olive oil, sea salt, etc.

Their web site has a list of stores that sell it, but there was no place in the

San Francisco Bay Area ... just some place in L.A. That's why I contacted

Rainbow.

Alex ... once Rainbow gets in stock, I'm sure we'll have a lot more people who

will try it and then who will be able to answer your question.

On a related note ... it was awesome how Rainbow started stocking Daiya cheese,

in part because of questions from people. My sweetie and I recently

bought a 10-lb block from Rainbow, divided it into pizza-sized amounts, and put

it in ziplock bags in the freezer. So now we have daiya cheese ready whenever

the pizza-making mood strikes. I personally still prefer pizza WITHOUT cheese

of any kind (all the better to taste the vegetables and zesty tomato sauce), but

my boyfriend is a cheese-aholic, so the daiya cheese is a must for us. We had

some Italian ladies over for a party a few weeks back, and they were so

surprised and impressed when they found out the cheese was vegan! I can't

believe it fooled these Italian ladies, but I guess so. (I hadn't meant to fool

them; they know I'm vegan, so I figured it was obvious that the pizza that I had

made and that we were eating was vegan. Since THEY THOUGHT the pizza had real

cheese, I guess they hadn't connected the dots.)

One of the Italian ladies said she is lactose intolerant (although apparently

she eats dairy cheese anyway), and the other one said she can't do soy, so both

of them were very excited about Daiya cheese (which is made with tapioca and/or

arrowroot, no soy).

I'm sure someone from the list (might be me) will post whenever the Wayfare

Foods cheesy dips and spreads are available to try at Rainbow.

I think a really fun event would be to do some type of food party / food sampling around the vegan cheeses, including both homemade and store bought).

For example, people who like to cook and have good homemade vegan cheese-y dishes could bring them. or, I love this tahini/miso cheese sauce from Joanne Stepaniak called "I can't Believe it's not Cheese", and I've tasted some awesome mac-n-cheese dishes made with nutritional yeast.

And then combine it with a taste test of the commercial vegan cheeses (Rainbow has the best selection, I believe).

It would be interesting, too, to get a large population of people who currently eat dairy to try the vegan cheeses, as well, and see how the ones they like compare to the ones the vegans like (would they be the same or different?) It's been so long since I've eaten dairy cheese that I can't even remember what it tastes like ..

Cheers,

Tammy

Speaking of Daiya, the Whole Foods on 4th at Harrison is now carrying the

" cheddar " Daiya (shredded). It's packaged in tubs in the refrigerated

cheese/pasta case by the wine section. They anticipate carrying the mozzarella

version soon.
