Guest guest
From my Frugal Foodies mailing.. Tuesday, April 20th—April Guest Chef Night will feature co-chefs who I’m quite excited about. They are Gerri Asuncion and Laurel Kops, and they’re hoping to start a Frugal Foodies in Oakland sometime in the next few months. Gerri is the former chef and owner of “The Vegan” restaurant in Maui, and Laurel specializes in raw and macrobiotic cooking. They hope to one day open up a vegan café together, and for their night at Frugal Foodies, they’re cooking up something vegan, macro, and perhaps raw, along with sharing ideas for a healthy and vibrant vegan lifestyle with an Asian-Cali bistro flair. This will be our only entirely vegan night of the month, and I expect that it will fill up fast. Frugal Foodies [info] Saturday, March 27, 2010 5:06 AM frugalfoodies [frugalfoodies] April at Frugal Foodies After a few months off, Frugal Foodies will be back up and running in Berkeley on Tuesday nights in April (with one exception). In addition to reading about what’s coming up, please help spread the word about Frugal Foodies in Seattle and our newest location in Boston (info about this and all else FF-related at www.frugalfoodies.org). And now for April in Berkeley and a few important notes at the bottom of this missive: Tuesday, April 6th—it’s Theme Night at Frugal Foodies, and since I’m returning from five weeks in Indonesia, we’ll dedicate this night to the cuisine of the world’s fourth most populous country. I don’t yet know what we’ll make but it’s a pretty good bet that there will be some coconut, some other tropical fruit, and rice in some form or another. The Indonesian food that I’ve had in the States is quite different than what I ate while traveling there—I had the same extra-culinary experience in Thailand years ago—so I’m not sure what angle we’ll take in this regard. But the food will be tasty, and it should be a fun-filled night, especially after the two month Frugal Foodies hiatus. Tuesday, April 13th—sorry to report that we won’t be holding our Vegan Night in April since I’ve got a Fotomio gig for this night that’s been planned for months. But fear not, the Guest Chef night one week later will be totally vegan, and we’ll do a wonderful “Julie’s Vegan Night” in May, so stay tuned for that. When Seattle had their grand opening of Frugal Foodies in January, they made four really wonderful beet dishes, so I’ll be stealing many of these recipes, and maybe adding a few of my own. Beets are very versatile and are in season in April so think beet chocolate cake, beet crostini, and some unbeatable salad. As always, please know that you must pre-register for all nights at Frugal Foodies and may do so either by replying to this email or by sending a note to info. Please know that it might take me a few days to get you registered since I have a long international flight ahead of me, but you should certainly hear back from me by the end of March at the latest. Lastly, the DiversityWorks Annual Garage Sale is coming up in early May, so if you have anything to donate, you may bring those things to Frugal Foodies in April or contact me to arrange delivery-pick-up. We love books, CD’s, outdoor/sports equipment, toys and games, household things, tools, and even small furniture. Just about the only thing that we don’t like are old computer equipment and used clothing. Thanks in advance for your donation to a good cause (www.diversityworks.org) .
