Hi All : )  As most of you know, Howard Lyman is a 3rd or 4th gen. cattle rancher turned vegan + activist.  Nicolette Niman will be representing Niman farms, who say they sell " humanely raised " beef.  This is a debate between the two of them on whether a 'good environmentalist' can eat meat.

Lyman will be arguing " no " , Niman will be arguing " yes " .  Sounds like it will be a spirited, exciting and educational debate!

I would imagine they'll take questions, so it would be good to have a lot of vegetarians/vegans present, especially those who are knowledgable about the destruction meat consumption is wreaking on the world.

or at the door the night of the event. At least since the publication of Diet for a Small Planet, the environmentally conscious have worried about the impacts of eating meat.

Raising livestock is resource-intensive, often polluting, and, as we are beginning to learn, a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. It’s also one of the ways we’ve fed ourselves for millennia. So is there an ecologically sustainable way to eat meat?

At this public debate, Ari Derfel, co-founder of Gather restaurant in Berkeley will moderate a conversation with Nicolette Hahn Niman — a Marin rancher and author of The Righteous Porkchop — who will argue that there is and Howard Lyman — the author of Mad Cowboy: Plain Truth from the Cattle Rancher Who Won't Eat Meat — who will disagree.
