Guest guest
Dates vary in moisture by variety, storage time and conditions, as well as outright drying. Dates grow in hot desert climates, so you wouldn't likely find them growing in Florida, they'd probably mold, if they survived at all. Regarding the Date People, I honestly don't know whether they are certified organic, but I know them personally, and they are organic and beyond. I realize you don't have access to any dates locally, that's why I suggested shipping them in. And by the way, they'll customize any sampler you like, just ask! Some types are so sweet that I want to dilute the sweetness by eating them with nuts. It's odd to hear that's a bad food combination when they taste so well together. >I still don't really see them selling dried dates. I >guess you mean >the packaged pitted ones that are drier than the >nonpitted fresh >ones. But I eat them both without noticing much >difference in them. >I don't eat dried fruit though. I can't imagine by >your definition >of fresh ones that they're rare in North America, >California and >other hot areas with palm trees produce a lot of them. North America is pretty large with different climates. I think of fresh dates as rare here because I've only seen them once. I've never been to California and I haven't found any in Florida. I'm have to check out some palm trees in the fall. I usually see dried, which look/taste very different from the fresh...and they're often sold in the bulk section. Maybe the fresh weren't completely ripe. They had a crispness. The weren't extremely sweet like the dried, but I figured the moisture diluted the sugar. What I'm calling dried dates are not completely dried. A friend received some really dried dates in the mail from India. They were like hard candy and had no moisture. Guest guest
I strongly recommend the Date People; I have ordered 45 pounds of dates from them in the last year (some for gifts, I am not eating all these myself! LOL), and they are perfect! The folks are very helpful and very kind, very nice to deal with, and I've been able to experience a much wider variety of dates than is normally available to me. (They have sampler packages of dates; mine included eight different kinds.) They can be reached by phone, not by email, and they are very good about returning phone calls. Guest guest
I love Jaime and his wife Anjou (Date People). Please do also also consider Bautista Organic Date Farm, 760-396-2337. They do have different selections available, if for no other reason than that the best of the harvest at one may be different than the best at the other, in any given year. I buy about 150 pounds per year, in a combination from the two. Guest guest
That IS a nice selection! Note that this is an order form for the Date People, one of the two sources I mentioned earlier. Also, note that the form is a bit outdated. I have only tasted about 1/4 of those, so I can only help somewhat. Also, there is information missing. Some dates, particularly the moistest varieties, are harvested and graded, usually #1/#2. The #1 are the REALLY juicy wonderful ones, and the #2, when fresh, are still better than most dates in the store. Usually there is a price difference. For example, from the grower (Bautista) I've seen 15 lb of large Medjool #1 at $40, the same quantity of #2 at $30. So I'd want to ask some questions before ordering. The Date People ALWAYS ship high quality dates, in my experience. Also, their shipping arrangements are good, so shipping is reasonable (given the weight). The 15 lb box is divided into 4 physical sections, these are the best choice for a large sampler box. Ask for 4 varieties, one in each section. The Khadrawi, really fresh Medjool, honey. Carmelita, and Black Precioso are all known to me as moist. The Khadrawi are the sweetest of the ones I've tried. Some people think the Black Precioso have a sort of chocolate flavor, and of course the Carmelita have a distinctive hint of caramel. All of these varieties are on the sweet size. The Medjool are the largest, then the Precioso, then the others all smaller. Barhi dates are also fairly moist, and this is one variety that sometimes makes it into retail stores for some reason. They are good, I just happen to prefer some of the others. The Dayri, purple and red dates are not my personal favorites. The Deglett Noor is another variety that tends to make it into some retain stores. It's somewhat drier and less sweet. The Zahidi is, if I recall correctly, an example of a drier date, and also less sweet. (In general, drier off the tree means less sweet, as there is less water to hold sugar in solution.) The brown fingerlings and Carmels SOUND good for some reason. Please note that not every variety is available every year or all year. For example, last year I got my Khadrawi dates from Bautista, because the Date People's crop didn't come in so well. But they told me that up front, which was really nice indeed! Hope this is a bit helpful! Guest guest
At least 6 months refrigerated, but they dry out a bit in the refrigerator. (Everything that is exposed dries in the refrigerator, that's how it works.) I repack the dates in mason jars and store them lying down. I vacuum seal the jars, which lengthens the storage life of the dates. I've literally lost 2 or 3 dates among the cases and cases I've bought. Guest guest
I found it was best to simply call them and see what they recommended at the time; all I had ever had were medjool dates and your basic dried up old dates from the grocery store. When I ordered, they were out of medjools, but had lots of honey dates which a friend had recommended (they are marvelous, by the way, VERY moist, very sweet and soft). I called them again after our first order had come, and asked them to describe what they might include in a sampler box; I followed their recommendations, and was very happy with the results. I now know what I prefer! Actually, they were all good, and amazingly different from each other, while still being alike in their " date-ness. Guest guest
Oh, sorry!! I bought one of those kitchen vacuum sealer machines from Tilia. I think they are available at Target, Wal-Mart, etc. The machine is designed for baggies, but there is an attachment for mason jars and other lids. No heating is involved. It's not a perfect vacuum, but my perception is that it helps. How can I be sure if they are indeed raw? She was at the health food store and they called the date seller's of their dates in the store and they, indeed, said they were not raw. How do we really know if the dates we are eating are raw? Maureen _____ I just talked with my long-time friend Jaime Jones, owner of The Date People. Unfortunately, I am giving a major presentation in mere moments. So I had to end the conversation, and we will resume during the next few days. After that, I will publish a ton of information on dates -- handling, processing, steaming, freezing, hybridization, sprouting, etc. I will also contact one or two other organic date growers and have at least one of them review what I have written before publishing to the group. In the meantime, I can verify that if you buy your dates from The Date People, they are never heat treated AND they are never frozen. They journey straight from the tree into cold storage, where they remain moist and reasonably fresh for months. The dates people in this group are receiving now, about which they have been writing so enthusiastically, were all picked during last fall's harvest, so that gives you some idea about how well they hold up when handled and stored well. These dates are true blue raw! Much more info by early next week, perhaps sooner.
