Guest guest
Okay Lane, Since your arm is broken I went ahead and made the call anyway. Here's the scoop: Model 4500 ---------- Sold only by dealers, price varies by dealer, generally $350-$400. 2-speed machine, low at 24,000 RPM, high at 37,000 RPM. (i.e., no low speeds) 5-year warranty Model 5000 ---------- Sold direct to consumers by Vita-Mix. $399 new, $349 refurbished, some available now, same as new. FREE SHIPPING. (I've purchased several this way, all fine.) Variable-speed machine. Rotary dial varies from 1100 RPM to 24,000 RPM, high speed is 37,000 RPM. Much more versatile for delicate items, I do use the slower speeds from time to time, though not that often. 7-year warranty Vita-Mix does honor its warranties, in my experience. So the 5000 seems the better choice, in the refurbished model, from what I can gather. Call Vita-Mix at 800-848-2649 , then extension 2308. Sue, one of the sales reps, is aware of your particular situation and will endeavor to help you most expeditiously. Best to all, Elchanan PS The also offer a " Super 5000 " model. This is the 5000 with a second bottle. Standard second bottle is designed for grinding grain, dough, etc. However, Laurie Masters has both and we cannot distinguish them functionally. I've purchased this model before to get the second bottle, but substituted the standard bottle. So if you like to entertain, teach workshops, etc., this may be a good avenue. The second bottle costs less when purchased this way than separately, later. Guest guest
You can run the machine on the highest speed and not heat the food. Heating results from friction and only occurs over time. Occasionally I want something slightly warm, I just run the machine longer, but this takes a few minutes. Smoothies run 30 seconds or less and there is no substantive warming issue. Guest guest
Lane, Don't use the slow speed when what you're blending isn't high in liquid or you'll burn out the motor. My husband tends to do this when making smoothies with frozen fruit, and I can smell the motor burning in the next room. I think it's better to use the higher speeds for a short time than try to use the slow speed on something that's too thick for the machine to handle.
