I just happened to have theatwebsite in my favorites. I didn't know they

had the protein powder. Thank you so much. I have asked many and finally

someone had an answer. I really appreciate it.

April

_____

HI everyone,

The largest, longest running studies on nutrition and disease have all

observed a strong and consistent correlation between excess protein and

almost every disease known to modern man. The quantities of protein found in

fruits and tender greens are perfect for our species, after weaning, about

5-6% of total calories, perhaps even a bit less. More than this is toxic.

So please don't eat " protein powder, " no matter who sells it or what claims

they make.

Thomas Pynchon once wrote: " if you can get people asking the wrong

questions, the answers won't matter. " Instead of asking " where do I get my

protein? " ask " How much do I need, what kind(s) best, what foods provide the

ideal quantity? "

Best to all,

Elchanan

I always suggest eating whole foods whenever you can. So in this case, I'd

suggest whole hemp seeds over powdered extract, why throw away what Nature

put there just because some food chemist came up with a way to do so?

Here's an idea for you: Peel an orange, put it into a high-speed blender

with a teaspoon or two of raw organic hemp seeds and blend. Voila, salad

dressing!

I hear what you're saying. Possibly since I have been so out of whack

for so long I need to take this gradually. When I cut out protein after

already having no bread type of any kind or dairy I find myself lying on

the floor unable to go pick up my son for school or make my family

dinner or do the laundry or even read anything since my eyes start

blurring. How about I go ahead and have a little protein until my body

has been on raw foods for several months and then I will feel ready to

make that change and let the protein go.

Hi April,

In my opinion, your need to function (particularly with your children!!) far

transcends your need to make this change at this time! I support you in this

(and in any) choice you make!

Isn't the protein content of human breast milk 5-8%?

tev

_____

Hi Tev,

This is a great question, first, because it is just interesting, and second,

because some RF (and other) teachers and researchers hold that, since our

growth rate during infancy is the highest at any time during our lives, and

since protein is perceived as integral to growth, therefore there " should "

be no time during our lives when we need a higher percent of protein than

that found in human mother's milk.

Laurie Masters and I have looked into this somewhat, but not thoroughly. We

have found the following:

First, we must all understand that this is a rather difficult topic for

researchers to investigate. They basically have to find nursing mothers and

convince them to donate some of their milk, at various points throughout the

course of nursing (day 1, day 7, day 30, day 90, etc.). The researchers have

to get a large of enough population to be statistically meaningful, AFTER

dropouts, and get them to show up on all the scheduled dates. Further, the

number or participants grows geometrically if the researchers want to

subdivide the group in any way, as by race, age, number of children, diet,

health measures, etc. So the amount of primary (direct, from the source)

research in this area is pretty limited, to put it mildly.

Much of the available data suggests that human mother's milk starts out at

around 14-15% of calories from protein the day the baby is born, then drops

gradually and steadily to about 6-7% (we found 6.3% in one " good " source) by

about 6 months into the nursing process. There is some evidence that the

protein concentration stabilizes at this point, but this assertion is

grounded as much in the absence of data as in anything else.

So we can softly say that human mother's milk ends up around 6.5% of

calories from protein. What I find interesting is this: This 6.5% number

corresponds roughly to the percentage of protein one would consume on a diet

consisting of fruits and greens. Depending upon the specific food choices

and the relative mix, we find people who eat this way generally consume

about 4-7% of calories from protein. So it " looks like " a good match, in

this sense.

Best to all,

Elchanan

Yes, Elchanan. That confirms it for me; and that was

my reason for asking the question, to see what

information others have.

I think this sort of data is of paramount importance

to all us raw fooders in putting into perspective the

diverse claims " out there " concerning protein ratios.
