Re: [Raw Food] Digest Number 1212

Are you saying the total calories among the veggie fruits are very low

compared to the sweeter fruits? or you just didn't include sweeter fruits as

being very low in calories also.

_____

Hi there,

I just looked a bit longer, both at protein and total calories. Actually, of

the several dozen fruits and veggie-fruits Laurie tracks, dates and zucchini

have the most protein, ounce for ounce. Go figure!!! Otherwise, the sweeter

fruits do average somewhat higher protein than the other fruits, but

overall, the fruits and veggie-fruits fall into the same range, ounce for

ounce.

Regarding total calories, ounce for ounce the fruits are noticeably higher

than the veggie fruits, perhaps double, but that is an arm wave at best. In

general, the tropical fruits are highest in calories, dates are out there in

a world of their own. Our species originated in the tropics, we are

designed, first and foremost, to flourish on tropical fruits. So this

finding is not surprising.

CAVEAT: Ounce-for-ounce means just that, I am comparing 100-gm quantities.

The physical volume (size) may vary, depending upon the density or water

content. So a " medium " banana and a " large " orange or apple have similar

calorie content. Almost all fruits and veggies are high in water, I'm not

sure how significant this would be if you were looking at different foods on

a plate.

All of this is the subject of an upcoming research and publishing project;

in fact, Laurie has already begun on a limited basis. We're actually going

to buy many, many foods, and photograph them in ways that will (hopefully)

help people learn visually what a RF kitchen " looks like, " and what 100

calories or 2 gm of protein actually looks like, in Nature's different

packages. Please don't ask when, we have no earthly idea at this point,

there are other projects as well, and we don't even have a " priority order "

for them yet. We could really use some help -- resources, arms and legs!!!

(Not quite yet, but soon.)

Best to all,

Elchanan

**Having emailed with both you and Laurie, I'd be happy to assist.

Look forward to hearing more about it...**

I'm not much into dates, too sweet, and there's something wrong (not

the kind of raw I'm looking for) with their driedness. I'm glad the

sweeter fruits average somewhat higher protein than the other fruits,

they taste so good, I get tricked into thinking there's no nutrition

there. Same for fruits being noticeably higher in total calories

than the veggie fruits.

I still eat them, sometimes they're very fresh. I like the sugar

high, I'm just concerned that I like it too much. I don't know, I

have nothing against them, I still eat them and I see them as being

perfectly raw. But there's something about the leaving them out as

long as they have to be left out to rippen, and then their gooey

nature when ready to eat. I may go on eating them indefinitely

though, they don't disturb my equilibrium. But maybe they are too

sweet and a little strange. I can't decide.
