I need to learn more about coconuts...

I was in a store the other day.. looking for a " young coconut " . what they had

was different then what I had seen before but I was unsure if to buy. But I

think I still as of yet have actually seen a young coconut. from some of the

pics I have seen anyway.. Someone please teach me...

I have seen regular brown fuzzy ones... that usually have a score in them to

help open them...

the other day I saw a white one still also relly fuzzy like the brown ones...

these all were fairly small in diameter. I thought the young ones were not

fuzzy... am I incorrect in thinking this? I have not gotten to an aisian store

yet..but will soon.. these were in a store called central market..

Hey Debbie!

I was up in DC area a week or so ago, and saw some " young " coconuts

for sale...they were all white, no hair, and had a different shape to

them.

I considered it for a moment, and then remembered something about the

sprays, or chemicals, or something, and I chose something else.

Having fresh cantelope and watermelon from SC and GA (where I drove

yesterday and today, taking our son back to school...) good..very

good...

all the best,

Bob

_____

Fungicide, all the young coconuts brought in from Thailand are soaked

briefly in a fungicide. The husk is very porous, so the fungicide does soak

through to the interior.

Ok so since these had the hairy stuff on the outside... Are there different

types of coconuts? I would not say these were the young ones.. as they did not

look like some I have seen in pictures... and they were the same size as the

brown hairy ones...

Two different varieties of coconuts. The brown fuzzy ones are generally

mature, very high in saturated fat. The white pointy ones are grown

primarily in Thailand and are harvested " young, " meaning that the coconut

water inside is still abundant and contains little fat (about 9% of

calories, if I recall correctly). The meat is thin, only a small percentage

of the food inside. Of course the meat is almost pure saturated fat, as its

texture suggests.

The Thai coconuts imported into the US are ALL soaked in a fungicide that

DOES penetrate to the inside.
