Move over milk, almonds are headed for pasteurization

By Carol Ness

Glenn Anderson is having a tough time swallowing the almond

industry's new rules that require heat treatment or chemical

fumigation of the nuts he grows on 12 organic acres in the Central

Valley of California.

" Most of our customers have called me and said, 'We don't want

pasteurized almonds, we want them raw, directly from the field,' "

says Anderson, 72, an organic pioneer whose farm in Hilmar, near

Turlock, Calif., has been in his family since 1912. " I think it's

being shoved down all of our throats. "

Write letters!

Here is one I wrote, along with the contact information for some key

people:

Raw almonds & mandatory pasteurization

When I wrote that letter, I didn't realize that California was the

only supplier of almonds in the U.S. If they go forward with this and

if we want truly raw almonds, we'll have to find a source outside the

country.

The article said that farmer's markets, roadside stands, and CSA boxes

were exempt. I didn't know what CSA was and found out it is community-

supported agriculture. I did some searching and this is an interesting

concept. You invest in the farm and get a share of the produce. For

an example, follow this link:

So maybe if we drive down to Anderson Almonds we'll be able to pick some up and

drive them home. Hmmm, seems rather like the '60s and '70s only what we were

driving was greener.

So maybe the solution is to hook up with some raw groups in CA and get them

to buy almonds at farmers’ markets or roadside stands and send them up to

WA.

Ron,

The CSA farm in Redmond (a short bike ride from where I used to work) is what

got me on raw food. We got so much stuff that by the end of the week there

wasn't time to prepare and cook it. I started eating it raw and realized that

GOOD produce doesn't get any better with cooking. About the same time I

realized that my co-worker, Stephan Boutenko, was the son of a raw food

evangelist and my next door neighbor introduced me to her books. The rest is

(living) history.

There are CSA farms here in WV, but the selection is more limited and farmland

is scarce so it isn't as feasible (shares are alll sold out). I still support

the farmers in every way I can by getting their produce from the farmer's market

and food co-op when it's available. You are very fortunate in the Seattle area

to have many good suppliers of local and organic produce. Definitely use them

all you can whenever you can!
