Guest guest
Just as we changed our time clocks , i was feeling the intention to get more raw foods again in my diet. I have been eating a large salad each day with a dressing made with flax seed oil, sesame seeds, lemon, garlic ,and some Braggs . At times after eating the salad i feel the same low energy after eating a heavy meal of cooked foods. This has dampened my intention in the past and i wonder what the ingredient may be that could be causing this . I usually make a dressing and keep it in the frig for some days. Is this it? Does the oil become rancid ? Or could the dressing have too much fat content and be difficult to digest ? Appreciate any ideas... Thanks , John
Guest guest
John, A good question to ask yourself is: “Could I make an entire meal out of this food?” Would you make an entire meal out of flax oil? Bragg’s? If not, you might want to reconsider putting it in your salad. Try making dressings out of only fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Oil is a fractionated food, 100% fat and very few nutrients. I don’t know if it goes rancid in the fridge, but think about the temperature in your stomach and about the length of time it takes to digest. Whatever time that is, it is past the recommended time to leave the stuff sitting out at room temperature. So whether or not it was rancid to begin with, it is a pretty good bet that it goes rancid in your stomach. Bragg’s is cooked and contains MSG. Most raw fooders are getting too high a percentage of their calories from fat, even higher than people on the Standard American Diet. Check out Doug Graham’s 80/10/10 book for details: HYPERLINK " http://www.foodnsport.com/ " www.foodnsport.com The FAQ page on that site will give you some basics. Guest guest
Hi John, I agree with Mark. You're on the right track suspecting your salad dressing, although the foods you're including in your salad could be partially responsible too. Almost all of the ingredients in your salad dressing are very taxing and difficult for the body to break down. None are really usable, with the possible exception of the lemon. Also, some common salad ingredients are difficult to digest as well, like cruciferous (broccoli, dense greens, etc.) or starchy (carrots, corn, etc.) veggies. If you keep your salads simple (tender greens like lettuce and celery, tomatoes, cucumbers) and eat them either without dressing or with dressings made from well combined, more easily digested foods (like nuts, veggies and acidic and/or non-sweet fruits), you will not experience the sluggishness. My favorite dressing when I was eating lots of salads was pine nuts, lime or lemon, dates, celery and tomatoes. Not the ideal combination, but good for transitioning. Nut-based dressings are better than other typical salad dressing ingredients like oils, garlic, vinegar, etc., but even these can cause that sluggish feeling. If that happens I'd suggest using fewer nuts (I try to keep it under 2 ounces), making a dressing without fats at all, or eating fruit instead. Salads are over-rated nutritionally, anyway, although they are helpful in transition. Guest guest
Thanks Nora and Mark ! Great info and suggestions . I did not know about questionable ingredients in Braggs . Will try to get away from the heavy oil dressings and try the alternatives you recommend. Also will add more sprouted mung, alfalfa and adzuki beans that should be easier to digest.
