US organic mangos

A couple of days ago I bought some organic California mangos at Whole Foods.

I assume (somebody please correct me if I'm wrong) that unlike imported

mangos, domestic mangos are not soaked in hot water or irradiated.

They were $3.50 each, but some of them were pretty large.

If you're thinking the 48 states that should be correct, but mangos

and papayas, etc. from Hawaii are most likely steamed.

How do we know that food has been treated. Do we just suspect all imports?

Ask questions of your grocer. Otherwise, suspecting is probably safest

when dealing with produce from outside the Continental US.

Sharon, we did investigate this awhile ago, and it appears that all or

virtually all imported mangoes are treated using some form of heating.

However, many raw fooders still perceive these fruits as raw. I eat them

regularly, I don't perceive any problem. Of course, I would prefer untreated

mangoes.
