I've tried going raw foods a couple times. I can manage about 10 days and then

fail. Did any of you run into this?

Is it a matter of just getting up and trying again and again and again? I

easily get tired of the same foods in the same way. Smoothies are no problem

and I continue with that most days, but somedays I just feel like cereals and

that's only the

beginning of the day.

And I like variety which I have trouble finding during the other meals unless I

spend lots of time with the dehydrator (which I haven't).

Please tell me this isn't just a matter of heavy will power because if I had

that, I wouldn't have these extra pounds.

thanks

Sharon

I don't know if this is much help, but my husband and I slowly eased into it. I

guess is also helped that we found out having wheat products made his seizures

occur more, so we had no choice but to drop all wheat and gluten products

(which, once you've done that, it's hard to live on cooked food like you want).

Also, we're big on researching (which is how we got into this lifestyle). After

researching all the bad stuff about cooked foods, I guess it came easy to us

because we knew it was the best and healthiest route for us and that we had no

other options.

As far as variety goes, I can't say much. Even though I used to have variety in

my life with cooked meals as an omnivore, I can handle little variety. My

husband and I are only living on Bartlett pears and avocados (and are possibly

thinking of getting some bananas) for now. It's good, because CostCutter has

great deals when you buy in bulk, and we have to live off of foodstamps for now,

so it all worked out well for us. We eat 2 or 3 types of fruits at once, then

have a different 2 or 3 types...and sometimes add in veggies and nuts/seeds. So

yeah, I can't really help you with dealing with variety.

Heavy will power? Maybe. But I've been obese almost all my life, and have NEVER

stuck to a diet long enough. With this, I find it much easier. Who knows, maybe

it's just from having my husband be supportive of me and the fact that I am sick

and tired of being obese. I can't really say...maybe everything played a part in

it for me. But after being Vegan for a few months and mostly raw Vegan for just

a short time, I'm down to 205 pounds today (just recently lost another 5

pounds). If that's not motivation for me, I don't know what is! I've had online

friends tell me that I look like I lost weight and am happier, just from seeing

a pic of my face! And that definitely helps my confidence out a lot! lol.

Sharon,

It's very common to try and fail so don't give up. I've gotten off the wagon

several times but always go back because I know it's the right thing for my body

and because of the amazing way I feel and the wonderful weight loss I

experienced. The most difficult part is that most other people do not eat raw

and it takes more planning ahead of time as we can't just stop at a raw food

place as easily as cooked food restaurants or fast food places. I know I'll

probably fail again but I look at it as failing forward. I pick myself up and go

forward again and learn a little more each time. The biggest help to me in

staying raw is a little book called Raw Food Made Easy by Jennifer Cornbleet.

All the recipes are easy and most use only a blender or food processor. I also

often do Google seaches for raw food recipes and copy many to a Word file and

save them by category. I've printed out a bunch and put them in a binder so I

can try new things. I also try to carry

a raw snack with me at all times. If I'm out and about and I'm starving with

nothing with me, I'll get an all fruit Jamba Juice (not organic but raw) or an 8

oz. container of guacamole with Pico de Gallo at a place like Baja Fresh. That

way I'm not tempted to eat something cooked when I'm hungry.

I think what might be helpful to a lot of us is if some of us who have been raw

for some time might share what they eat in a typical day just for some ideas.

Usually, once a person has been raw for a while, the daily menu gets much

simpler but it is a struggle at the beginning, especially since our social lives

heavily revolve around food, meals and eating out. I'm not shy to bring

something raw with me if I go out with friends to eat. It's a good conversation

starter about raw foods. I drink my green smoothies at work from tall glass jar

and it certainly is a fun conversation starter. Helps get the word out. LOL

So don't give up, no matter how many times you have to start again. You're not

alone!

Hi Joan,

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this encouragement! I also have a problem

with eating great and then less than great... I would love to see what others

eat in a day. Last week I made up a chart to keep track of daily eating,

exersise, meditation, etc. I listed about a dozen things I want to incorporate

daily. If I get it done, it gets checked off. Oh boy, is it an eye opener! I

thought I would have many more checks in boxes than I do...but it is a great

visual to keep me focused!

Sharon, as for me, simple is the only way. When I first started increasing raw

foods in my diet, I bought several raw food recipe books and found it was not

the way for me to go at all. If I was unwilling to spend hours in the kitchen

cooking elaborate recipes, what made me think I would spend hours in the kitchen

uncooking elaborate recipes? Duh.

So now, green smoothies, green drinks, salads, raw fruit (thank you, Creator,

for watermelon) a few nuts/seeds, and some superfood drink concoctions are my

simple go to foods. If I could totally eliminate the less than great food

choices and actually get that daily excersising in, I would be superwoman!!!

WooHoo...

Peace on earth.

Cheryl

Just thought of something else that helps me. I love desserts and many of them

are easy to make. Not too much guilt when you eat a raw dessert. The chocolate

mousse made from avocados in Raw Food Made Easy is super easy, quick and

filling. The berry cobbler with vanilla cashew topping is wonderful. If I don't

have time, I sometimes eat just some berries or peaches in a small bowl with a

little of the vanilla topping for a quick, filling snack.

Does anyone have suggestions for quick to make items that helped them when they

were trying to stay raw? Especially when you're out and about. I like that idea

of a check off list. I think I will do that also. I was thinking of making a

list of reminders of things I can eat and putting a copy inside my kitchen

cupboard door and maybe a copy in my purse or datebook. It's a battle and

there's too much temptation out there...at least if I let myself get too hungry.

I'm in So Cal right now caring for my sister and just came from the new Whole

Foods in Pasadena and they have a nice raw food section, even quite a few

prepared meals and desserts. I am so excited!

I have found the desire for a lifestyle change and the willingness to see it

through is what brings about the change. If you really want something you can

bring it about. There are many different ways to achieve your desires. Follow

the one that feels the best for you to get there.

While taking raw food classes many years ago, I heard lots of people saying that

they were having trouble staying raw and falling back to their old habits. I

was not having any trouble at the time. When I went through my notes I

discovered that my own journey had eased me into raw food. I had been a

vegetarian and then a vegan before changing to the raw lifestyle, for me this

the transition was easier than the others, however when I shared this

realization with the class it was not well met. The desire was that everyone

just convert to all raw and not go back.

For some this is possible for others it is harder. Just follow your own inner

guidance/feelings they will help you to get wherever you need to go.

There are many who are willing to share their own journeys and recipes. By

listening and learning you may find that one tidbit of information that will be

the catalyst to help you on your way.

Good luck.

Congratulations on the weight loss!

So far the only allergy I have is to a medicine, but then my parents grew a lot

of their food and we have been vegetarian for 35 years and 6 years ago we went

vegan. I don't know how much that had to do with allergies, but my husband no

longer has any either.

Variety: this morning in our smoothies, we had kale, leaf lettuce,

blueberries, bananas and apples plus we had a small bowl of homemade granola

with pineapple juice instead of a type of milk. So you can see what I'm up

against there.

I must do more simply. Thanks for the help

Thanks. I do make a weekly chart of " things to do " each day and it does help

immensely with the exercise and devotional time. I also get more other things

done with a check off list.

But when I do raw, the kitchen time has to be very minimal or things just pop

into my mouth. I have half a dozen of the raw cookbooks, but recipes that take

time aren't going to happen at this point in my life.

What a great idea to have a list of easily made things so one doesn't have to

think about the deleted foods.

But if you're eating avocadoes, nuts, seeds etc, aren't you getting a high fat

diet. I love all those things and ate them when I did the raw diet and believe

me, not one pound moved.

You could just bring a bunch of fruit. Or, if you want to prepare

something, why not put a whole bunch of cut up greens in a bowl, then add

some cut up tomatoes and mangos, cucumbers, etc. Then, in a food processor

put celery, tomatoes and mangos and make a thick dressing. Don't process it

much, leave it chunky. Pour it over the salad. I frequently have something

like this in the evenings. The sweet taste of the mango really makes a

difference.

There are some Thanksgiving recipes in Allisa Cohen's book that I've made that

are really delicious...sort of like a mock turkey loaf and a cranberry spread.

They are pretty easy to make. (www.alissacohen.com) I think for the cranberry

spread, you soak the dried berries and blend them with agave nectar in the

Vitamix. Can't remember exactly as I don't have that book with me. We made wraps

with lettuce, mock turkey loaf and cranberry spread and it was yummy.

Try Googling " raw thanksgiving recipes. " Something I love to do to get inspired

is to use Google and click at the top of the page on " images " and then type in

" raw foods, " " raw food recipes, " " live foods " or something like that and you'll

come up with tons of mouth watering pictures of raw foods. Then you can click on

the picture to go to that particular website. I find that with using the

" images " feature, I discover some new and different websites than if I just use

the regular Google. This applies to any subject you're searching, of course.

something raw with me if I go out with friends to eat. It's a good conversation

starter about raw foods. I drink my green smoothies at work from tall glass jar

and it certainly is a fun conversation starter. Helps get the word out. LOL

So don't give up, no matter how many times you have to start again. You're not

alone!

I've tried going raw foods a couple times. I can manage about 10 days and then

fail. Did any of you run into this?

Is it a matter of just getting up and trying again and again and again? I easily

get tired of the same foods in the same way. Smoothies are no problem and I

continue with that most days, but somedays I just feel like cereals and that's

only the

beginning of the day.

And I like variety which I have trouble finding during the other meals unless I

spend lots of time with the dehydrator (which I haven't).

Please tell me this isn't just a matter of heavy will power because if I had

that, I wouldn't have these extra pounds.

thanks

Sharon

Re: trying

There are some Thanksgiving recipes in Allisa Cohen's book that I've made that

are really delicious...sort of like a mock turkey loaf and a cranberry spread.

They are pretty easy to make. (www.alissacohen.com) I think for the cranberry

spread, you soak the dried berries and blend them with agave nectar in the

Vitamix. Can't remember exactly as I don't have that book with me. We made wraps

with lettuce, mock turkey loaf and cranberry spread and it was yummy.

Try Googling " raw thanksgiving recipes. " Something I love to do to get

inspired is to use Google and click at the top of the page on " images " and then

type in " raw foods, " " raw food recipes, " " live foods " or something like that and

you'll come up with tons of mouth watering pictures of raw foods. Then you can

click on the picture to go to that particular website. I find that with using

the " images " feature, I discover some new and different websites than if I just

use the regular Google. This applies to any subject you're searching, of course.

Thank you

We are going to a family Thanksgiving event. I always bring the vegan protein

as there are usually 2-3 who need that type of food, but what would one bring in

the raw food area. (Of course there are always the veggie nibbles put out)

Re: trying

I think what might be helpful to a lot of us is if some of us who have been

raw for some time might share what they eat in a typical day just for some

ideas.

You're not

alone!
