Guest guest
We like making smoothies and such, but because of our current blender (is there any blender that can make *thick* smoothies easily?), it is somewhat labor intensive. I'd like to move to pre-making a bunch of raw ice cream so it's a quick easy treat any time. Can anyone give any recommendations for ice cream makers and raw ice cream recipes for them? Thank you. The 4500 is similar, but doesn't have the center knob for a gradual increase in speed. The 3600 is the old metal unit. > Can anyone give any recommendations for ice cream makers and raw ice > cream recipes for them? You can find recipes on the web, but consider my book, Vice Cream (vicecream.com). It's a book of recipes for gourmet dairy-free (vegan) " ice cream " . About half the recipes are all raw. The rest still use a lot of raw ingredients, such as raw cashews.. Jeff

I've used the old metal unit before and it had the same problem as the others--an air pocket would always form around the blades and it would not mix the smoothie unless you constantly stirred it with the wooden tamper thing. Do the new models solve that issue? I've seen the blendtec doesn't even have a temper, but... still a little skeptical. >> Can anyone give any recommendations for ice cream makers and raw ice >> cream recipes for them? > > You can find recipes on the web, but consider my book, Vice Cream > (vicecream.com). Thanks for the pointer. After filtering the raw and the non-chocolate/no-caffeine, there might not be many recipes left for us, but I'll consider it. I see three ice cream makers on your site, but... Do you have a recommendation for an ice cream maker that: 1) Does not require any pre chilling of the ingredients. So, you just dump in the ingredients (possibly after going through blender/food processor of course) and it does the job. 2) Does not require ice/salt. Looking for an effortless solution. We've never used ice cream makers before, and are not sure how to evaluate which one is good quality and easy to use. Thanks!
Guest guest
I would recommend BlendTec's Total Blender. It's very powerful and makes ice cream making a cinch. I use the Cuisinart Frozen Yogurt and Ice Cream machine. Frozen raw vegan ice cream can be hard to dig into, as it freezes solid, but there are two ways around this that I know of, one which I haven't tried yet. one way is to pour the ice cream batter into popsicle molds. The second way is to add some Irish moss (a sea vegetable) to the batter when you're blending ingredients. This is the one I haven't tried yet. Apparently it adds no flavor and makes the batter very smooth and easier to eat when frozen. Guest guest
Get Jeff Rogers book " Vice Cream " http://www.thenaughtyvegan.com/ Best recipes on the planet for raw vice cream. Very tasty. As far as ice cream makers go, I use a Cuisinart and we also have a couple of Donviers. The Donvier is a manual maker and lots of fun to play Uno with the adult kids and pass the maker around the table. By the end of the game we've got vice cream!! The Cuisinart is electric, plug it in, turn it on and soon you have vice cream. Either way the end result is very delicious. Shari
Guest guest
> Can anyone give any recommendations for ice cream makers and raw ice > cream recipes for them? Yes! I use Jeff Roger's book, Vice Cream, all the time in combination with a BlendTec blender and a Cuisinart ice cream maker. (The kind where you freeze the bowl.) I make delicious vegan ice creams (although not just the raw as I make the ones with cashews and maple syrup as well), and get lots of compliments from veg*ns and meat eaters alike. Air pockets can still be an issue, but the Vita-Mix does come with a tamper. I don't recall hearing of a blender that doesn't get air pockets. I believe that is one aspect of the design of a blender that pulls the food into the blades. Unfortunately it also pulls air. I have found that keeping the tamper in the food while blending will reduce the amount of air that gets pulled into the blade. Cuisinart food processors have less of an issue with air pockets, but do not blend as well. They are better for sorbet type desserts that use soft fruits. > I see three ice cream makers on your site, but... Guest guest
A pastry chef friend of mine who has written a book about ice cream/sorbet swears by this ice cream maker (after a year solid of testing). It's on the expensive side, but apparently is a fantastic workhorse of a machine: http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-ICE-50BC-Supreme-Cream-Maker/dp/B0007XOHN6 --Tea --- On Sat, 11/15/08, Jeff Rogers <jeff wrote: Jeff Rogers <jeff Re: Raw Ice Cream Recommendations Saturday, November 15, 2008, 8:47 AM > I've used the old metal unit before and it had > the same problem as the others--an air pocket would always form around > the blades and it would not mix the smoothie unless you constantly > stirred it with the wooden tamper thing.
