Guest guest
Good afternoon (EST), I'm signed up to travel to Guatemala with my local Rotary club in March and I just got notice about the immunizations. Below is the list of what they require. Does anyone have any sage advice for avoiding illness (and immunizations if possible) when travelling to Central Am? I would like to drink the springwater and eat the fresh produce without having to cook it. Thanks. Nick Hein Morgantown, WV ============================ The fee for the travel counseling is $35, and they will provide information about safe travel practices and eating choices which I need to talk with you more about. If you don't have a lot of experience in this part of the world, I would strongly suggest it. The fee for immunizations will vary according to which ones you already have. You will need Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid and tetanus. The hepatitis immunizations are usually good for life, the oral Typhoid for 5 years, and you may want to get a tetanus booster if it's been over 5 years. ============================
Guest guest
Nick, Did you look into a religious exemption? Who is requiring this? The USA? Guatemala? I wrote to a friend of mind who travels to Guatemala regularly and I will report back on what he says he does. Guest guest
Good afternoon (EST), I have to go for my innoculations in a few hours. I never heard back any further than Mark's short note. Another friend just came back from Guatemal and said he didn't have to get any shots as a tourist. Guest guest
I never heard back from my friend. But I would do whatever it takes to avoid the shots. Maybe the Rotary guys don't know what they're talking about. Guest guest
Mark, I ended up getting Hep A and Tetanus, I have an oral prescription for the Typhoid innoculation that I have to fill yet. The trip leader initially contested that if I get sick it will distract everyone else on the mission from accomplishing as much. The trip leader (a personal friend, and dentist) was understanding once I explained that I wanted enough information to make the best decision, but it turned out nobody has that. My consolation is that I can cleanse any toxins in the innoculations by eating well. I'm now getting excited about all the new fruits and vegetables I'll get to try, and the fresh avocados and bananas. Thanks for your help.
