Guest guest
Does anyone know where, or how to get raw tahini somewhat cheaply nowadays??? I used to get the Maranatha brand bcuz it was only about 4$ for 16oz but it's not available anymore, and the next cheapest brand is Artisana(I think) but it's about $10.50! Thanks, Erik... Guest guest
If you have a vita mix Erik you can make your own. Just buy the sesame seeds and blend a lot making sure that you don't overheat the mixture. So it can take a little time to do it cool . . .. I've done it many times and it's REALLY nice - doesn't have that bitterness about it like commercial RAW tahinis. . Toni WAY cheaper ! Guest guest
Toni, I don't eat sesame seeds but I think my folks might enjoy tahini. Do you add any liquid when you make it? And do you use hulled or unhulled sesame seeds? Do you have a source for the freshest ones? Thanks much, Nora > If you have a vita mix Erik > you can make your own. > Just buy the sesame seeds and blend a lot making sure that you > don't overheat the mixture. Guest guest
I don't have a source Nora because I don't eat it anymore either but I used to make it all the time especially when I was working in the raw cafe. I don't add any other liquid at all You just start of with the seeds (and actually a blend of hulled and unhulled is rather nice - say 2/3 hulled and 1/3 unhulled) If you have one of those vita mix blender jugs with the blunt blades it is good but the other works OK too. Just take your time and blend till the seeds warm then let them cool and do it again and again. The idea is not to cook it as you would know. It is SO nice compared to the commercial tahini. Thinking back, I'm pretty sure it was a three cup measurement that I found to be a good amount to do. Blend till small one cup at a time and then put them all in together. Bit of a deal isn't it but well worth the time. Toni On Mon, Feb 9, 2009 at 11:16 AM, Nora Lenz <nmlenz wrote: > Toni, > I don't eat sesame seeds but I think my folks might enjoy tahini. Guest guest
I have used hulled and unhulled sesame seeds in a coffee grinder to make raw tahini. It doesn't come out perfectly smooth, but works fine for me in sauces - and is very cost effective.
Guest guest
I don't have a Vita Mix, I have a L'Equip RPM blender and don't know if it will handle that task. Can you do the same thing using a food processor? Lorri _____ On Behalf Of Toni Vandyke Monday, February 09, 2009 8:05 AM Re: Re: Raw Tahini??? If you have a vita mix Erik you can make your own. Guest guest
Thanks for the feedback everybody... I don't have a vitamix unfortunately, but if anyone wants to sell any of their homemade tahini I might be interested in buying some(as long as it's smooth). I actually have a really good raw snack that I make with tahini, fresh apples, raisins, and sea salt. It only takes a few minutes and is incredible imo, just slice an apple in 4, then spread tahini on top of the apple(not the skin, but the inner white part), & then sprinkle some sea salt on top of that, & finally top it with some raisins(they should stick to the tahini). Just thought I'd share it, bcuz when done right it can be a nice addition to a persons' diet, as long as they don't mind the sea salt... Thnx again, Erik... --- On Mon, 2/9/09, Toni Vandyke <tonivandyke9 wrote: Toni Vandyke <tonivandyke9 Re: Re: Raw Tahini??? Guest guest
I used to make this all the time, but then got worried because I don't think my unhulled sesame seeds were sprouting. I definitely recommend at least soaking first. I am going to try this again soon. It is also wonderful with parsley wrapped in lettuce leaves. , Erik Hansen <ephirt wrote: > > > > Does anyone know where, or how to get raw tahini somewhat cheaply nowadays??? > > I used to get the Maranatha brand bcuz it was only about 4$ for 16oz but it's not available anymore, and the next cheapest brand is Artisana(I think) but it's about $10.50! > > Thanks, Erik... > > > > > > > > > >
