Guest guest
Good evening, I just returned from a lecture at WVU on Systems Biology. The speaker was from Seattle, very highly credentialed and (from his lecture and talking to him afterwards) genuinely interested in evolving an understanding of biology that driving us to health rather than driving toward the brick wall of disease and hoping to miss. In fact the talk was part of a lecture series celebrating Darwin's 200th birthday and 150 years since publishing " The Origin of Species " . Talking to him after the lecture I asked him (as delicately as I could) 1) Of all the human and animal experiments he talked about, none of them gave ANY indication of what food was ingested beforehand. Therefore aren't they all suspect because this amounts to exercising NO control over the most important inputs. 2) How would our study of medicine be different if it focused on " health and how to attain it " rather than " disease and how to avoid it - mostly/sort of/OK not really " . His response surprised and pleased me. It was similar to something I've heard here - " I believe that we will come to that, but we first must pass through current times and attitudes. " My parting comment was, " I've already come through it for myself - I'd like to know how I can help others so I have some sympathetic company. On the walk home I was reminded that I have that company in this online community. Thanks to all of you. Guest guest
You can only help others if they are willing to consider and accept your help. Guest guest
Hi Nick, and thanks for sharing this. I feel so joyful when I read about the clarity with which you listen to such a presentation ... and the kindness you display in your questioning of the presenter. You are correct, they do not consider diet as a factor in much of anything, therefore they never treat it as such or control for it.
