Guest guest
Good morning, On Friday morning I'm leaving for a 9 day mission trip in Guatemala. Until then I'll be in the other Washington (DC) for a bike summit, so I wanted to ask a few last minute questions in case there's anyone on this list who's been on a similar trip. For most of the trip we'll be in Antigua sightseeing, the actual mission work (3days) will be in a remote town called San Lucas Toliman. Here's what I'm wondering about.... The trip leaders recommend bringing all kinds of disinfectant and anti-diarhetics (sp?). I'm going on the assumption that my immune system is exceptionally strong, but I don't know how strong. Should I bring this stuff as a precaution? Are there other precautions I can take to avoid chemical drugs and disinfectants? (I respect the leaders' legitimate concern that if I'm sick I can't help with the work). What foods are safe to eat without undue risk of gastric disaster? I figure anything with a disposable skin is OK. Anything else? Are there local delights I should look for? I got my shots, all but the Hep A. Are there any precautions I should take to avoid getting that? I appreciate any help anyone can offer. I'll report back when I return on Mar 24. Thanks in advance, Nick Hein Morgantown, WV
Guest guest
Hi Nick, You might want to give Chrysalis Yashpal Jayne, ND a call http://Yashpal.com He travels quite a bit in the tropics, as well as all over. He has me on Miracle Mineral Supplement (MMS) regiment and that may or may not be of use to you as it supposedly works on bacteria, pathogens, viruses. http://miraclemineral.org Anybody else have experience with MMS? Cheers! Guest guest
Hi Nick, A common " natural " prevention for gastric problems during travel to third-world countries is probiotic prophylaxis. I suspect the best thing to do is just eat simply before and during your travels, all live plant-based foods, preferably mono, and not overeating. This would help your intestines build and maintain a stronger flora. I suspect heavier foods (nuts and seeds) would not be ideal. Having said that, if someone felt a need to follow a probiotic protocol, but was interested in a raw alternative to probiotic supplements, cultured foods, such as cultured nuts/seeds (seed cheeses) and " milks " would be an option. Naturopathic physicians may encourage one to bring " natural " antibiotics along for the trip. I'd be curious to hear what natural hygienists would say about it. Guest guest
Oh, yeah... and rejuvelac may also provide natural (not encapsulated/ processed) probiotics. Jeff
Guest guest
Hi Nick. I haven't been to Guatemala but I have traveled with Seattle Peace Chorus to Russia, Chile and Cuba. I didn't get any shots while everybody else got them. I just kept quiet about it. I didn't get sick during any of those trips. In Cuba we were told to brush our teeth with bottled water. After a while I started brushing my teeth with tap water and I was alright. I think eating simple helps. I went on a safari trip in Kenya two years ago. Everybody except me took malaria pills. Most of them took quinine. I ate any raw food I could find and didn't get sick either. BTW, I had the best pineapple I've ever had in Kenya. Guest guest
Helen, Thanks very much for the advice. Sounds like your life is a wonderful adventure. This is my first time out of the country. I'll file a report when I get back. Nick - Helen Monday, March 09, 2009 3:13 AM Re: Last caul for Guatamaula Hi Nick.
