Guest guest
People who choose to eat raw almonds have had no US source of raw almonds (unless they live in California near an organic almond grower) since Sept. 1, 2007. This is a very sad state of affairs. The United States is supposed to be about freedom. Where is a consumer's freedom of choice? If the USDA insists on providing pasteurized almonds for consumers, then at least let organic farmers sell their almonds completely raw. Let consumers have a choice. Raw foods enthusiasts believe the studies that show that heating almonds produces harmful chemicals that can lead to disease in the people who eat them. So in effect, the government is forcing us to get sick if we want to eat almonds. This is a dictatorship, not a democracy! For shame! Guest guest
Just to clarify, farmers are allowed to sell directly to consumers, which not only includes roadside stands and farmers markets, but also phone, mail, and internet ordering. Be sure to ask for un-pasteurized almonds. Some farmers are selling both pasteurized and un-pasteurized (also, organic/non-organic). Guest guest
Gee, I was told by a lawyer friend that the law doesn't permit farmers to mail raw almonds. If I can buy them directly from a farmer, that would be great. Of course, living all the way over here in FL, how could I know for sure the almonds I was mail-ordering from California were really raw? And if I ordered them in warm weather (which is the norm here), the almonds might actually heat up in trucks or storage facilities on the way over. Which would make them cooked, not raw.
