Guest guest
Is there anyone out there aware if there is any truth to the rumour that young coconuts are NOT vegan, due to how they are harvested?? I was told (yes this sounds funny and strange) that monkeys were used to climb trees in Thailand to get the young coconuts down??? i am very strict vegan and dont believe, like most of you, here in explotation of animals in any way? I have been trying to search info. about this on the web and have found nothing. The person who orginally said that they had heard this, also says that he may have been mistaken.. I would rather be safe than sorry however.. If anyone knows anything at all..lemme know! Thanks!! Heather
Guest guest
Aloha Heather, When in Thailand saw some monkeys getting cocos for people . Locals/tourists exchange sweet fruit for the monkeys to get the cocos . Did not see any abuse or harm to the monkeys and sometimes they did refuse to get the cocos which the farmers just laughed about. Don't know if they were being held in captivity ( seems un-likely as the coco trees were not fenced etc. so if they did not want to be there they could easily leave ) or wild monkeys showing up for the " work " to get the fruits...interesting dynamic...have not heard if the exported cocos are harvested in this manner. Hope this helps. Rich --- On Fri, 4/10/09, heatherann916 <heatherann916 wrote: heatherann916 <heatherann916 Is there any truth in the rumor that young coconuts are not vegan, due to how .. Guest guest
I am not sure if that is the only way that coconuts are harvested, but I do know that they are often harvested via monkey. I have a question....Do you drive a car? If so, there is something inside of the rubber in tires that comes from cows. Just thought you'd want to know, since your extremely strict about animal abuse/exploitation. --- On Fri, 4/10/09, heatherann916 <heatherann916 wrote: heatherann916 <heatherann916 Is there any truth in the rumor that young coconuts are not vegan, due to how .. Guest guest
Christina, That's interesting about car tires. I don't drive, but I walk and bike. Are animal products used in shoes and bike tires? If so, are there alternatives that won't encourage animal exploitation? Thanks for making me aware of this. Guest guest
I use all animal products at home and for shoes all check to make sure they are animal free. I do drive a car and i am aware of this.. I try to be as practical and elminate as much animal use as possible. my car doesnt have leather. I have heard that about the tires and then of course film and glue.. but choosing to eat coconuts on regular basis is a very simple sacrifice.. I have now heard this about the monkeys as well as the fact that since they are not organic they could actually contain alot of others things as well. I hav now decided to give up young coconuts as well, for the most part ... , " Nick Hein " <nick.hein wrote: > > Christina, > That's interesting about car tires. I don't drive, but I walk and bike.
