Guest guest
Thank you all for your responses regarding using a car. A dear friend of mine who is also raw founded this club to have access to affordable fruits and vegetables. She has a kind heart and does not charge anyone in the club for the time and service she provides. You can order by certain amount (e.g $10, $25, $30 etc. a week and get varied produce) or you can order what's on the list she sends every week (you list a minimum and maximum and she orders based on what makes sense). You pick up from her home on Fridays in San Francisco. She does not ship to others, so you need to live in the area to benefit from this club. I can be contacted directly if you are in the area and have interest in joining. If not, you may want to consider forming such a group. She visits the wholesalers that sell directly to stores and restaurants. Because we have formed a group, we order a significant amount to be able to order directly from them. She makes the order typically 1-2 days before pick-up and picks up what was ordered very early in the morning. There are some limitations: you cannot visit and smell/touch/taste the fruit. You order, pick up, and go. Wholesalers don't have the time and are not farmers' markets. They sometimes have sales on produce that is becoming ripe (potentially too ripe for normal stores to carry until customers buy), so we even get discounts on the wholesale price for certain items. For these items, she is sometimes given the option to taste, but usually she has to buy a case to taste and decide whether she wants to buy another one on the spot. The wholesalers won't provide us a list of produce because there is so much (so many different kinds of each type of fruits/vegetable). So we end up tasting produce at stores/farmers markets in limited amounts and forming a list of what we want and they have confirmed they have when she calls in. Because we aren't a huge group, the kinds of fruits we choose from every week may be 3-5 different kinds, with 3-7 different kinds of vegetables. Most of what we get is US based, but this week I ordered champagne mangos (mexico). I also ordered honey tangerines and valencia oranges, turnips, spring mix, sweet peas, and asparagus. The produce is very fresh -Caroline nmlenz Sun, 12 Apr 2009 07:31:59 -0700 Re: Buying club -- for Caroline Caroline, Would you care the share the info on the wholesale club you belong to? Guest guest
Thanks for that explanation, Caroline; I am very interested in starting something like this. I'd like to contact the person who started the San Fran group. Does she have a website? Thanks again! Guest guest
She does not have a website. I have forwarded your request to her via e-mail. This is a private club, and I would be happy to forward anyone's contact who want to get in contact with her. Kind regards, Caroline nmlenz Sun, 12 Apr 2009 16:41:30 -0700 Re: Buying club -- for Caroline Thanks for that explanation, Caroline; I am very interested in starting something like this.
