Guest guest
Back in the 1900's (OK, near the end...) I had compiled the nutrition tables on my website, soystache.com. It took me several months of spare time to gather the information from the National Nutrition Database, and format and fill the tables on my site. Once I ranked it by calcium content (per 100 gram portion), I was interested to see the first cow's milk (supposedly a great source of calcium) at #42! It didn't even make the top 40! I was checking some foods and data today, as I do periodically, and noticed an oversight. I realize, as I've mentioned to people in the past, it is possible that the milk is actually lower on the list. If I missed some other foods, then once added, it could be moved down the rankings. Well, I found a category of foods that didn't show up on my original searches. I've added them and re-ranked the calcium chart. These are all " whole foods " . Care to guess where the highest ranking cow's milk is??? Take a look: http://www.soystache.com/calcium.htm Note how many in the top are plant-based foods! (Not that we should focus on eating for nutrients, but it's interesting to me to see traditional views of " nutrition " overturned!) Guest guest
Jeff, Great chart! Thanks for going through all the work to put that into a clear and understandable format. Is there any way to rank the bio-availability of the calcium (how easily the body can get it from the food into our system). Guest guest
Hey Nick, I'm not sure about that. Information may be available for some of the foods, but I wouldn't (at this time) know how to approach that. Good idea though! Doug Graham suggested I do a table with the calcium ranked based on 100 calories instead of 100 grams. That I can do. At some point I'll convert that data and add another version of the table. In addition to the calcium table, I also have these tables: Protein Protein as a percentage of calories Fat Fat as a percentage of calories Iron Fiber Magnesium http://ultimatenutritiontables.com/ I plan to expand the tables later on with more information.
