Guest guest
I need to replace my filter and would like one a little more effective than my Pur. I can't afford a reverse osmosis unit but wondered if anyone has an opinion about the other countertop units that are available. I'm looking at the 80.00 - 100.00 range. I'd love one that filters out fluoride along with all the other stuff, any ideas or opinions? Thanks, Lorri
Guest guest
I think an RO is the only one that filters fluoride. Sorry, can't help you more. We would like to put one under the sink as we're tired of having the ro sit on the counter. Anyone with ideas as to brands? Shari
Guest guest
I realize it is less convenient, but I've been getting my water from PCC for many years. At $0.45 per gallon to fill my bottles, the price is right! The water is purified by reverse osmosis, charcoal, ultraviolet light, and ozone. Guest guest
Hi there, I've done some research into water and have read that reverse osmosis and distilling are the best. Reverse osmosis systems are very pricey but you can buy a small water distiller that you can keep on your kitchen counter for under a couple hundred dollars. I bought one years ago and love it. It is easy, convenient and super cheap (free now that it has paid for itself and it uses very little electricity). Guest guest
Thanks Audrey, but that's what I want to eliminate - something sitting on my counter. I've tried distilled water and do not care for, at all. Shari
Guest guest
Distilled water is acceptable to use for a short-term cleansing process but long-term it is important that one put the minerals back in it. <http://geo./serv?s=97359714/grpId=3344134/grpspId=1705129295/msgId =14374/stime=1248448128/nc1=1/nc2=2/nc3=3> The least expensive and best product that I have found for that is the Vitamin Shoppe brand Trace Mineral Liquid MADE by Trace Minerals Research. VS has several different types of TM's so it is crucial that the right type be bought. Link: http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/store/en/browse/sku_detail.jsp?id=VS-2291 Buying from PCC is an option, but using plastic especially for distilled water (or any acidic water) WILL cause leaching. Also, keeping containers sanitary when used over and over again is a concern. Remember there is a artisan spring in Lynnwood. We need to identify more of these locations. Or if one wants to make the effort and get your own water there is a spring off I-5 exit 183, go west on 164th 3-4/10 of a mile to the bottom of the hill and you will see cars on the north side. Quite a popular place; busy even late at night. One can go there 24/7 and get free water. There are two “fill up areas” and each spills out five gallons per minute. I have found this water to be more effective than Crystal Geyser. Rather than re-use plastic, glass ½ gallon jugs are 50 cents each from http://rockridgeorchards.com/default.aspx or (360) 825-1962 (they’re at the WS Farmers Market/ask for boxes/cleaning them is a hassle) or the glass one quart jars that many juices come in can be used. Just strip off the label and they can be cleaned in the dishwasher. You can also get boxes for them from stores. Water Machines such as the Kangen should be considered. Mia Dalene and David Hempseed have one. For more info EM = David.Hempseed
Guest guest
For a little more money, I notice that Costco had a reverse osmosis unit for $179.? I remember checking those out before and they were hundreds of dollars. Suzanne
Guest guest
I bought 5 gal. glass jars from a wine brewer for about $20 and would take those to the coop.? Its heavy, but I could handle it and I am a pipsqueak.? I also used to have an under counter unit when I lived in Pierce County (fluoride) that eliminated the fluoride.? It was not RO.? Can't remember the company I got that from - somewhere back east that carries air filters, etc. Also, someone at the coop was squirting a couple of drops in her glass containers of grapefruit seed extract to kill the bacteria.? She would put a little water in and swish it around and dump it.? A small bottle costs about $10, but would last forever.? Suzanne
