Keep in mind that the above is advertising text. While it is presumably " technically " true, there is probably no legal definition of " calcium-rich " . If you read the small print, what you can see is that 16 medium-sized figs--a very large serving--has as much calcium as a glass of milk, and that you'd need to eat over 60 a day to get a day's worth of calcium (as recommended by the USDA) for an adult woman. They're actually a much better source of potassium than calcium. Enjoy your figs...but don't count on them for calcium. Guest guest
But every little bit helps! Eat some figs, broccoli and other good veg foods that have calcium as often as you can. Many people think milk from cows and dairy products are the only good places to get it. ~ PT ~ , " Brandel D. There are definitely good vegetarian sources of calcium, and even eating minor sources does help. But broccoli isn't a good source, either. Or, rather, broccoli isn't a good *dietary* source of calcium. It's relatively high in oxalic acid (at least according to most reliable sources), so the calcium in it isn't well-absorbed. It's also not very high in calcium anyway; you'd need to eat 6 pounds to get the recommended daily amount. Good vegetarian sources of calcium include sesame and almonds. Kale and parsley are among the best choices for dark green leafy vegetables (from the perspective of high dietary mineral content). It should also be pointed out that vegetarians generally need less calcium than non-vegetarians. Guest guest
Just popped in for something fun to do with figs. Pricey @ grocery store but they ran a special - buy one tray, get one free. going to check out the bread recipe now. YUM! my mother had a tree - we only made fig preserves so no experience with anything else to make with these other than fresh. Such a GREAT group! Guest guest
Thanks, Helen and Shari, for the nice words about the figs. The pick up location will be the outdoor parking lot of Seattle Whole Foods. Although the area is typically congested there was actually lots of parking available when I was there last Saturday so hopefully that will be the case again this time. I will be there at 6:00 pm on Saturday, in my light blue Toyota Sienna (mini-van). If you want figs, email to me the quantity you want, whether you will be picking up in Seattle or Bellevue, and a phone number I can reach you at on Saturday. The quantity will be limited so it'll be first come, first served. Best wishes, Nora nmlenz
