Cool. I love checking out new groups like that.

One way you can usually tell if they are active

and good is by reading their monthly message

log count to see if people even bother to post.

Keep us updated. I imagine your Texasgrdnr group

will be of great benefit to you. I should go see if they

have a southern oregon gardening group. I don't

know much about Texas, but here in Oregon the weather

is very different in the southern region as compared to

the more populated northern areas; same is true of

our eastern high dessert. Lots of environmental diversity.

I am fortunate to live in a zone 4-7 region with a longer

gardening season. Too bad I am not very good at it yet.

Feral, I have just sent this information privately to Shawn but since

you want to know too I'll post it to the group in case others are

interested.

I belong to three very good gardening clubs:

GardeningOrganically

Organichomesteadgardening

AnHerbGarden2

All three are friendly and helpful. I have learnt lots from them. What

may be a downside for you is that they are very active groups and

generate lots of mail, but manageable if you go 'digest' or read the

mail at the site.

Cheers

Shawn-

Are you planning on growing veggies and herbs? I'm in Tennessee and

am getting ready to try an herb garden for the THIRD year in a row.

This year I'm having the hubby build a raised platform so I can put

the herbs in pots, as Cheech and Chong(my lab babies) ate them last

year. Each year my crop has been doomed by something... I am

determined that this will be the year! I'm not attempting any

veggies yet simply because I have a limited area that is sunny since

I have over 50 trees in my yard and am lucky to be able to get fresh

produce just down the road at the farmers market. I'd love to share

horror stories with you and PT, as I'm sure I'll have plenty if this

growing season follows suit. The journey begins...

Hello Roxanne.

Well, 3 times a charm right. Poor Cheech and Chong with those

uncontrollable munchies attacking your garden, haha. What happened to your

previous mishaps with herb gardening? Perhaps that can help us and other

future gardeners know what to look out for. Raised platform...is that going

to be a concrete slab of some sort?

My ideal plan is to try to grow some peppers, maybe some other veggies and

some herbs. I don't know if it will be container or what. I live in an

apartment, so will be trekking to the Mothers house to start my new

adventure. She has a big empty lot next to her house with some good shade

and empty areas. She received some free rosebushes (pink) which I am going

to help her with (um yeah, have no idea what I'm doing as well). There is

farm of feral, semi-feral cats out there as well as the usual squirrels,

black birds, possums etc. I'm not exactly sure if I am going to use some

caging to keep them out or what.

I plan on getting some books either this week or weekend to find out what I

need to do for this region. I would definitely enjoy all of us sharing each

others progress/horror stories etc. Maybe we should all start a newbie

gardeners/collective encouragement/advice/progess report/success and/or

horror story collection group, lol.

Cheers,

Shawn

I have one nice sunny spot, but the soil, despite three years of work

on it, is just yucky. It is next to the house so my hubby is going

to attach a nice, wide cedar shelf/platform to the house and anchor

it into the ground. I'm putting my grill next to it so it can double

as a cooking work station. The construction of this project is

scheduled for this weekend, but we'll see since the 6yo plays soccer

both days... As for the first crop of herbs I attempted, I have no

clue as to what happened to them...dead, dead, dead. Strange seeing

how I can basically grow most flowering yard plants. What kind of

peppers are you going to grow? I might give peppers a try since we

love them so. Check Home Depot for stuff that you can sprinkle

around the roses to keep the critters out. Can't remember what it's

called off hand. Hey, I'm all for that group. I know I would keep

it busy with all of my goof ups...

That dual workstation sounds wonderful. And if that's a charcoal grill, I

believe plants are good to get rid of the carbon monoxide that the charcoal

gives off....er something like that anyway.

I'd like to try some habaneros and jalapenos (perhaps something a little

more exotic).

" Check Home Depot for stuff that you can sprinkle around the roses to keep

the critters out. "

Funny you mentioned Home Depot...last weekend I picked up this simple little

kit. (There were several different to choose from) It was a habanero

kit...a pot with soil and hab seeds. All you have to do is water it. If I

get results, I might try to transplant it into the ground. They were bout

3-4 bucks.

Hope your 6 year old has a good game.

Cheers,

Shawn

As per the green thumb newbie group, maybe if we can generate enough

interest and a wonderful leader *hint hint* something could come about this,

lol. There would definitely have to be a rant section, lol.
