Oh I know it is late. Here it is the 6th and Tuesday!

But it just dawned on me I had forgotten to post

this. So jump in, give a roll call and a quick answer to

the question of the week when you have time. ;)

QOTW: What sort of eco things do you do now as a habit?

[examples: recycle, products you use/don't use etc]

My answer: I recycle and compost. I am also dubbed

an official " eco-geek " by my kids for using those canvas

shopping bags when I go to the store; sometimes to their

delight, I forget them at home. *lol*

I recycle, reuse bags at the store, turn off the water when washing

hands/brushing teeth, sometimes don't flush the toilet (i know it's gross), take

quick showers, don't have any grass in my yard to water (all xeriscaped), don't

take sacks at the store when i can carry it, used to compost, need to figure out

how to compost in the sand, bought a new house that was constructed with lots of

insulation and an efficient heating/cooling system etc., donate used items to

charity, don't buy extra items i don't need, purchase organic and

non-genetically modified foods as much as humanly possible, donate money to

causes, volunteer my time for eco-causes.....i'm an eco-freak myself, though I

know there is a lot more i could do.....

Wow... see i do almost all of this too! I live in a condo so don't have much to

do with the yard here. And i thought i didn't do much! I guess those little

things add up. One of my favorite *low waste* products is the stone deoderant! I

love that stuff and got a friend hooked on it too!! And people are always

surprised when you say *i don't need a bag* at the store. If i'm taking a short

trip to the store i ride my bike instead of drive.

One thing that has helped me to *trim down* my belongings and curb my urge to

buy is www.flylady.net She has great ways to declutter. And to keep it out also!

Funny you mention bags at the store and dirty looks. I have had them put my

item in a bag, then I said I didn't need one and they threw it in the trash!!!

Kids......I have tried that stone deodorant stuff too, but it doesn't work well

for me. :(

I never feel like much of a tree-hugger, but everyone " accuses " me of

being one. I recycle. I used to compost, when I had a garden. I

drive, but I drive a fuel efficient car, and whenever possible I

encourage the bf to leave his big gas guzzling truck at home so we can

take my little econobox. What else? I refuse a bag if I don't need it,

and choose paper over plastic when given the option. And I reuse the

plastic bags that do make it to my house. What else? I buy organic

when I can , and choose minimally packaged products whenever possible.

I use an electric lawnmower because I can't stand the thought of the

pollution from a gas mower.

Mostly, I just try to be conscious of the little things that I can do

that might make a difference, without greatly inconveniencing me. When

its appropriate, I point those things out to other people in my life as

well.

An electric mower?? cool! I had a rotary mower [human powered]

when we had a house years ago.....had planned on getting one

again, since we are back in a house, but the 'in-laws' bestowed

upon us a gas one........[how could I say no? They don't like me as

it is!!]

I ask for paper bags when available. I re-use both the paper and

the plastic bags. I didn't have access to recycling before moving,

but will start it now......did years ago, tho~ in the old house. And I

just spent some time a day or so ago, looking at sites online on

composting! So, maybe soon.

I forgot to add that I also drive a fuel efficient car and combine my trips as

much as possible. I also recently moved to Albuquerque where grass is more of a

luxury than a necessity and was ever-so-pleased when I bought a house with NO

GRASS!!!!!!!! SO, one of the most eco-friendly things I did was to get rid of

my lawnmower all together and not mow and not water anything!! I also planted

cacti, yuccas, and other desert plants in my yard so I don't have to water

them!Paper vs. plastic bags.....the debate is actually out on that one as to

which has more environmental impact. When I worked several years ago at Wild

Oats, we had both bags and the word was that the paper bags were worse for the

environment as they are heavier and you can't put as many on the supply trucks,

so bag for bag they take more energy to transport. Of course, the plastic bags

are made from petroleum by-products and aren't as recyclable. The best answer

on bags is to use cloth ones or reuse the ones you have. So, that is what I do

the majority of the time.Composting....I did this religiously at my old house in

Kansas City where I had a lawn and topsoil and it actually rained. I have

nothing but sand now, no topsoil and very little rain and things don't seem to

decompose as well in the sand. I haven't yet done anything about this yet in my

new house except to dig a small hole and put a few rotten potatoes in it. I

need to keep adding to it. I would prefer some type of self-contained barrel

thing to put the compost in and something that would allow me to turn it easily.

Of course, I need a few dollars before I can purchase such a thing and I know

Gaiam sells them. If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know!

i recycle. i use the canvas bags and reuse paper

sacks when i shop for groceries too. there is a store

in my area that gives a 4 cents credit for each bag

you bring in, so i like shopping there. we use a push

reel mower and don't water our yard. i turn off the

water when brushing my teeth. i wait until i have a

full load before i run the dishwasher or washing

machine. i drive a honda and it gets great gas

mileage...i only fuel up every other month. i don't

use harsh chemicals, pesticides, or fertilizers. i

make my own cleaners. i also try to use natural

tolietries (soaps, toothpaste, shaving cream, shampoos

and conditioners, lotions, etc...). i want to compost,

but compost piles aren't allowed by our home owners

association....i'm thinking about starting one anyway.

these are just a few little things that don't take

much effort. i probably could do more.

Hey, another " reel mower " ....man, I miss mine. LOL! The soft

swish-swish sound it makes is so calming.

I forgot to mention earlier that I also make my own cleaners. I don't

have a dishwasher, but I do use dish pans to hold wash and rinse

water. I've done these so long now, it's a habit, and I kinda 'forgot'.

<silly me> I don't use chemicals on the lawn either.....I tend to

*like* the flowers that pop up. They are not unwanted 'weeds' to

me. :~)

Well, I don't do as much as I should either :=( We live in a condo, so

there's not the grass mowing/watering problem, and *everyone* recycles

here it seems. I'm careful about water. I re-use plastic bags (we have

two dogs to walk several times daily), re-use small paper bags (for

keeping mushrooms, etc. in the crisper), and carry a cloth shopping bag

for small purchases. We haven't driven a car in thirty years, so we

don't use much gas except now and then when we need a taxi. I avoid

over-packaged foods, buying in bulk, and prefer organic/non-GMO. Organic

vegetables and fruits are delivered to my door weekly. And I buy

vegan/cruelty free products, whenever possible, especially for personal

hygiene, skin care, etc.. . .

Best,

Pat

When I had a lawn, mine was primarily dandelions and I NEVER sprayed or watered

it. My neighbors must have hated my dandelions, but they didn't bother me.

yeah I live at home with my folks and we do the recycling thang with

bottles and cans. we dont take in newspaper cause it pays way too

little and is just too hard for us as we all have some physical

problems but we do place them in the blue LA city recycleables

container so we aint just throwing them away. also we save larger

plastic deli containers and margarine containers for re-use such as a

serving of ice cream before throwing them away. stay cool Dave
