Companies Face Fines For Mislabeling Health Foods

Six Of Seven Companies Headquartered In Florida

POSTED: 11:48 a.m. EDT May 7, 2003

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida's agriculture commissioner has a few words of

warning for producers of health food: If a food claims to be healthy, it had

better be.

Seven companies are facing enforcement action by Florida Agriculture and

Consumer Services chief Charles Bronson. The companies are accused of

mislabeling diet products by understating the amount of sugar or carbohydrates

in their products.

Bronson said the products made by the companies have failed repeated testing.

His department said consumers are being ripped off twice, since they are told

the foods are healthy and they also pay extra for them.

Proposed fines range from $500 to $10,000. Six of the seven companies are

headquartered in Florida.

The companies are:

Carbolite Foods, Evansville, Ind.: understating the amount of carbs in chocolate

chip cookies. $1,000 fine.

Ilana's Cookies, Hollywood, Fla.: saying date cookies had no sugar, when they

did. $1,000 fine.

Susan's Bakery, Sunrise, Fla.: seven violations of adding sugar to several

foods. $10,000 fine.

DeBoer Food Importers, Sanford, Fla.: having sugar in " sugar-free twist

chocolate spread. " $1,000 fine.

Gilda's Industries, Hialeah, Fla.: sugar in gluten toast, despite label saying

it's " sugar free. " $500 fine.

FGH Consulting USA, Hialeah, Fla.: claim coconut mousse was sugar-free when it's

not. $500 fine.

Cheeter's Diet Treats, Hollywood, Fla.: mislabeling rye bread as " high protein "

and understating sugar amount in banana nut muffins. $500 fine.
