Often only a part of it is harvested - petals, bark, leaves, fruit peel, etc, and the plant continues to grow and produce. But yes, you're right; it takes a lot of raw material to distill down to the oils. Personally, I'm glad that they hydrosols are also being uses for therapeutic purposes now, so that the byproducts of the distillation process are being put to use as well. I hate the thought of those wonderful essences being tossed away in the water! > So, when using them, I tend to use as little as I > have to and am very respectful of the plant I'm using. That's one of the things I like about them, actually. More often than not, less is better than more with EO's. It only takes a drop or two, and often a 1% or 2% dilution is all that's needed for therapeutic benefit. > That said, > there are lots of " replant " suppliers out there and sometimes, EO's just hafta be used! Given the choice, I usually prefer a " natural " product over a chemically manufactured one, whether it's EO's or herbs, or something else similar. DEET is just plain evil, in my mind. Effective, but evil. -- Sherri The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has determined that the maximum safe load capacity on my butt is two persons at a time, unless I install handrails or safety straps.
