Guest guest
(Maybe this has been over-discussed, I don't know but I wanted to post it just for an update if anyone was interested.) http://www.msnbc.com/news/915952.asp?0cv=CB20 A judge ordered 24 groups to split up a $10 million McDonald's settlement that stemmed from beef-laced fries. Beef-laced fries pay off for veggies Twenty-four groups to divide $10 million from McDonald’s ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO, May 20 — A Cook County judge has named 24 groups to divide a $10 million settlement from McDonald’s over beef-laced french fries, resolving a dispute over which organizations would share in the awards. THE RULING MONDAY by Circuit Judge Richard Siebel followed months of legal wrangling since McDonald’s agreed to the settlement last year. The settlement was intended to make amends to customers who unwittingly ate the fries cooked in beef-flavored oil during the 1990s, when the burger chain had said it used only pure vegetable oil. Lawsuits filed in Illinois, California, New Jersey, Texas and Washington charged the restaurant chain with deceiving people who don’t eat meat for personal or religious reasons. Oak Brook, Ill.-based McDonald’s offered 60 percent of the settlement to vegetarian groups, 20 percent to Hindu and Sikh groups, 10 percent to children’s nutrition and hunger-relief efforts and 10 percent to promoting understanding of Kosher practices. But some vegetarian groups protested recipients chosen by McDonald’s and other plaintiffs’ lawyers, saying some were anti-vegetarian or otherwise inappropriate. Siebel last month rejected three of the 26 proposed groups because attorneys in the case had family members or other personal involvement. On Monday, he added the Hillel Jewish campus organization to the list of participants and said the group would receive $300,000. McDonald’s attorney Peter Hecker said all the groups on the company’s settlement list are responsible and intend to educate the public about vegetarianism. © 2003 Associated Press. Guest guest
Interesting article! I wonder what vegetarian groups the settlement went to. I called McDonald's recently and asked if they still put beef in the fries - the guy said " no. " Then I asked him if he was sure and he said " we add beef flavoring, " acting like that wasn't really an animal product. I asked if McDonald's had any plans to stop adding this ingredient to make the fries vegetarian and he said no. Here's their number if anyone wants to call and request a veggie burger or AT LEAST vegetarian fries: 1-800-244-6227. Guest guest
Years ago (probably mid 90's), I read an article about McDonalds trying out veggie patties in some of their locations (they mentioned California). I went on a trip to New York soon after that and saw a Manhatten McDonalds that had a sign promoting the product (ya know " try our new etc. " ). I also saw an article recently about them discussing the pattie again...wish I could remember where I read it. Maybe they are trying to revive it...I'm sure not to please vegetarians or the health-conscious but just to compete with BK's pattie, lol. The corp. has apparently made drastic cut-backs monetarily and is closing down some shops and cancelling the renovation of others. I read some quircky article about how they stopped doing business with a smaller business which made their business cards and other such things. This business has relied on the corp. for them to stay afloat and I think is now suing or something....just more gossipy corp stuff...don't hold me to it. Guest guest
Here is a site that has some samples of vegetarian and vegan products at fast-food places. They also sell a cheap guide with more info. I'm really dissappointed that they aren't offering it for free. While things are slow here I am going to do some more searches for free info...theres bound to be some out there. http://www.vrg.org/catalog/ff.htm Here we go this is a pretty good listing and is free.... http://www.vegetarian-restaurants.net/OtherInfo/FastFoodRest.htm I can't vouch for how updated or accurate they are but seems like a good resource. Guest guest
McBeef's also has trialed the Veggie burger here in London, Ontario - can't help but notice the signs as we go past there (and I do mean *past* not *in*) there several times a week. I think Burger K. were first with it (don't do them either) here. For what it's worth. Btw, about the 'beef flavouring': I understand it is possible to get that flavour from chemicals *not* derived from animal products, so that as long as it isn't 'natural' flavouring it could be vegetarian. Whether or not that is what McBeef is doing, I dunno. Right now I'd not thank anyone for meat-flavoured anything - don't like the taste or smell anymore - another good reason to stay away from places that grill their meat under your nose. Guest guest
The " natural flavor " in McDonald's fries IS of animal origin, specifically beef. Now on their list of ingredients when they list " natural flavors " they put " animal origin " or " plant origin.
