I'm a newish vegetarian wanna-be-vegan, and I'm confused about TSP/TVP. I've

tried the pre-packaged " crumbles " that resemble ground beef, and they went over

well in my usual spaghetti sauce, but at that price, are not going to be a

staple of our diet. How does one go about buying this in more economical units?

I saw some " TSP " in the bulk bins at the healthfood store, which said

" reconstitute in water " . Could that provide the same type of product as the

" crumbles " or is it all in the seasoning?

On another note, I noticed that many of my on-line communities were a bit more

contentious than usual lately. (Some got downright flamey, but I was proud to

see the vegetarians rose above that) I do my part for peace by never posting

responses to touchy subjects, especially when I feel the strongest urge to do

so, but I wondered if it had something to do with the recent eclipse/lunar

activity or something. :)

Very good possibility Ronda... I would not be surprised if that was the

case.

Hi Ronda. I'm in Oregon, too. :)

I know some folks use the bulk TVP in recipes

with great success. It is certainly much more

economical than buying it the way I currently

have to. I have not been able to find it in the bulk

section of any of my stores. I need to bug some of

the store managers again. *lol*

As far as your question about how they taste compared

to the packaged brands, I have no clue. I would imagine

they might require some more seasoning than the name

brands that are already seasoned some. Hopefully others

on the list that use the bulk TVP will give you more info on

them.

I had never heard of " TSP " , so I did a little digging. Yes, they are the

same thing - it stands for Textured Soy Protein.

'Made from soy protein, the generic name of this food is actually textured

soy protein or TSP. TVP is actually a brand name, but it is the product you

will most likely see in your natural foods store and grocery store. If

packages are labeled TSP, it's the same thing.'

Thanks for the info. and the great link Lady Sappho. That link led me to a

business here in town (close to Houston anyway) which sell tvp as well as

other cool foods....
