I was wondering if any of my fellow vegans on here know what

particular brands of sugar are not filtered with animal bones. As I

understand it, the only way to know whether sugar has been filtered

through bones is to ask the company since it is never listed.

this article lists several brands:

http://www.vrg.org/journal/vj97mar/973sugar.htm

what I picked up, just by scanning includes:

Jack Frost Sugar

Florida Crystal sugar

Domino Sugar *turbinado sugar* [only]

C & H *Washed Raw Sugar* [only]

any brand of Beet sugar

There may be some I missed.

Some sugar compaies use bone char filters in the production of

refined sugar.

" Bone char, made from the bones of cows, is at times used to whiten

sugar. Some sugar companies use it in filters to decolorize their

sugar. Other types of filters involve granular carbon or an ion

exchange system rather than bone char. "

We have some links (in the " Links " section) to some information on

companies that do and don't use bone char.

For the US :

For the UK :

I believe the use of bone char filters was discontinued in Australia

some time ago.

Hope this helps,

Kim.

One other thing I forgat to mention is that some vegans are opposed

to sugar is due to the harm done to the wildlife when the cane

fields are burnt.
