> Honey I can live without. I have a problem with cotton.

What is wrong with cotton?

Is it because they pour pesticides on it and kill off the cotton

weevils and the other bugs???

This is one reason I don't ever think I will call myself " vegan " .

Even organic farmers kill off the bugs that kill their crops. If I

eat such food products, can I still be called a vegan?? Technically

the bugs are being killed with intent.

What if I have my house sprayed for termites or carpenter ants?

Technically it's cruel and malicious intent and bugs are getting

killed to save my house just like the bees are getting injured to

harvest the honey.

What about all the mosquitoes we swat when they try to eat us

alive? Is this a vegan thing to do??

I'm not trying to be mean, but these are questions I've thought

about and reasons I would not call myself " vegan " . The terminology

and definition implies something far more perfect than I could

achieve. Even if I discontinued eating all animal products, I think

I will always be a vegetarian.

don't worry so much about the label vegan, just do what you can do

and what you feel is right... the honey thing is even debated among

vegans. if you want to get really technical, any harm you do to the

environment is harming animals, even if the effects are not realized

for many years you are harming future generations of animals and

humans. this is why i try very hard to be enviro friendly. but none

of us are perfect. i don't drive a car, but i know that by using

electricity i still cause pollution. i just try to minimize it. And i

really hate to put any member of the animal kingdom on a hierarchy,

but honestly if i had the choice between saving a pig or a bee i

would choose the pig.

so just because you can't help save every insect is no reason to not

support the dairy and egg industries if you feel what they are doing

is wrong. it's not that insects don't feel pain, but at least they

don't live in captivity like cows and chickens have to. they have

short life spans and are able to live some kind of life before they

are killed. veganism is an ideal, like communism or anarchy or any

other ideology. it will never be perfect, but you can only do your

best, because you're only human.

Oh, I don't. In fact, I'm not really even vegan and don't know that

I ever will be 100%. I certainly don't wear leather or eat gelatin

or meat or eggs or drink milk. My last holdout is still cheese. I

wish there were a perfect substitute. I'm working on that and have

given it up at times, but recently fell off the wagon. I sure hope

to get back on that wagon one day! I guess even if I stopped eating

all animal products, I would still call myself just a vegetarian. I

agree with you though that it's about the effort.

I recently found out that at certain times (don't know how true this

is) that all the recyclable material the city collected ended up in

the dump for lack of a processor! Stuff like this makes me want to

stop recycling, but the way I look at it is that it's more about my

effort than anything. I did my part and it's not my fault the city

didn't do theirs. I guess I just have to continue to reduce and

reuse as much as possible and be less dependent on recycling.

speaking of cheese, if you can find the " follow your heart " vegan

gourmet cheese in your local store, you should definitely try it. i

tried the mozzarella recently and i swear i like it better than real

thing (it's not stretchy but boo hoo, it tastes good). only downside

is it is expensive. way better than veganrella or toffutti in my

opinion.

Bleach is what's wrong with cotton. Pesticides [all in the soil, and

surrounding fields and streams] too, if you are not buying organic.

Personally, I prefer cotton for many things.......Like Dave [i think]

said, we are only human....

If we gave up everything " bad " we wouldn't live long in today's

" modern " world.

I don't know what I was thinking when I posted this. Cotton doesn't come from an

animal!! LOL Wool is what I was thinking. But I don't buy wool because it's so

itchy.

You're right, nobody is perfect. I just worry about the cloths I wear sometimes.

I don't buy leather unless I can't find what I need in some other material. When

I first started I decided to just cut out meat. Then I read all the damage

dairy can do to our health, so I cut that out as much as I could. I'm getting

better at it because I'm educating myself on the different ingredients in food.

But, then I found out about all the animal cruelty on the farm factories. Now

it's as much ethical as dietary reasons that keep be away from animal products.

But I know that I can's save the whole world by myself. Nobody can. I do drive

though because I have to. I don't live in town. If I did I would do a lot more

walking.

>follow your heart

I'll see if my health food store has it. If not I'll ask if it can be ordered.

Thanks for the advice. :-)
