Guest guest
i would definitely make the case that any vegan or vegetarian should at the very least be taking multivitamins. it is just really hard to get 100% of all essential vitamins from food- you would have to eat a plethora of different fruits and veggies each and every day. i wish i could but i don't have the stomach capacity, the time, or the money for that. unfortunately there is a lot of hooplah going around that vitamins don't work because you need to get your vitamins from food (i.e. fortified cereals, lol) but the only thing that is true is that certain vitamins require fat, protein, or other vitamins to be absorbed. what is annoying is that most multivitamins lack sufficient biotin, calcium and magnesium; i guess they assume the average meateating milkdrinking american already gets plenty of biotin and calcium. Don't be misled by the concept of RDA and the marketing hype of the multi-billion dollar supplement industry. Just because there is a notional recommended daily average intake for a given nutrient, this does not mean that you need to consume that much every day. It's an *average*. For example: B12. If you have reasonably good reserves of B12 then these can keep you going for 5 to 10 years. (It's probably not a good idea to go 5 to 10 years without any B12 intake, but this is just for the sake of argument !) If you eat a reasonably varied diet with plenty of different fresh fruits and vegetables it's pretty hard not to get the RDA of any given vitamin, assuming you averege things out over a reasonable period. Take a multivitamin if it makes you feel happy, but you probably don't need it unless you eat a very restricted diet. Paul --
Guest guest
>what is annoying is that most multivitamins lack >sufficient biotin, calcium and magnesium I've read that vegetarians don't need nearly as much calcium as meat eaters do. It's because of their high protein intake. The protein leaches their bones of calcium so they need to consume much more calcium to compensate for that. We as vegetarians don't need as much because we don't consumed as much protein. I agree with you that it's important for us to take vitamins. Even if we could eat enough food to get all the nutrients we need our soil is depleted of a lot of it's nutrients. ~Janice~ Be your own cheerleader! Encourage yourself every step of the way! Guest guest
Good points, Paul. ~ pt ~ I have a very modulated way of dealing with my anger. Guest guest
it's not just that meateaters get too much protein, it's that animal proteins are more acidic, so it prevents them from absorbing a lot of calicium.
Guest guest
well, like i said (i think) i wish i could get all my vitamins from fruit and veggies but i cant afford to. the only way i could maybe afford it is to buy in bulk, but there's no way i could eat it all before it spoils. there are certain vitamins you should be ingesting everyday. so it's just easier to take a multi. sort of like insurance.
