Guest guest
Anyone who receives this, and knows me [Pixx] you can be assured that this is *not* a forward, it has come directly from me. This is *not* a hoax. I just received a virus in my email [no, I did *not* open the attachment, I had the email disinfected before even opening it]. I wanted to warn any one I know, because this is one I have not heard of before. This is particularly for any one who has their own domain, and therefore receives mail at that domain. This morning I received an email from " admin " Since I am the *only* one at pixxArt, that was an automatic red flag! I had it scanned, *and* disinfected, and found that " W32/Mimail " [a known virus] had been attached. I have long since known that it is possible to make an email appear to be from someone it is not actually from. But I have never seen [or known of] one's own domain being used. The sender in this case was attempting to make it look as if this email was sent to me by my company administrator, in order to con me into opening it. Worse, [after disinfecting it] upon opening the email, I discovered that the message said that my email was about to expire[!] and that I needed to open the attachment for instructions. If I were not the only one here, I think I probably would have fallen for that! PLEASE BEWARE! Sorry for the interruption [OT topic], and cross-posting....I just wanted to get this info out there. Guest guest
Thanks, Pixx, and no this is not a hoax because it happened to me too over the weekend. I do not have my own domain - but I received a message from 'admin' (we're santbrown) with the message that my addie was going to expire and to check attachment for details. I couldn't open the attachment, because I have not got the right software. Lucky me. I contacted the LWEB person by phone and he said there was no such address as admin, that of course it was a hoax, and how lucky that I couldn't open the attachment. I seem to remember that the attachment was called something like document.zip - is that right? And since then I have heard that one must *not* open them because they contain a virus. Sorry for the long explanation. I thought that I should give you some support and backing on this - cuz it is very annoying at the very least and could be a real mess if one opened the dratted thing. Thanks for validating my own experience - sorry you had it but, in a way, I'm glad I'm not alone ;=) Best, Pat -- SANTBROWN townhounds/ http://www.angelfire.com/art/pendragon/ ---------- * " I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet " - Gandhi * " But for the sake of some little mouthful of flesh, we deprive a soul of the sun and light, and of that proportion of life and time it had been born into the world to enjoy.
