Guest guest
Hi, all. I just joined (last night), and I thought I should post an introduction. I'm Carla, 33, and have no idea what to say next...or who, in fact, I'm talking to. I've skimmed the last three days of posts, and there're a bewildering variety of people and conversations going on. I'm sure all will become clear in time. Anyway, the cookie recipes in the files section look lovely...I'm not much of a cook, but I bake well (I mean, I bake *other things* well; I have never been baked), and like to ply family with cookies. A whole batch of assorted veggie cookies would be a fun project. Ta for now.
Guest guest
Welcome to the group!! Yes, you will note that at any given time there are several discussions going on. Please feel free to add your $.02 (or whatever currency you like) to the discussion! One of the more recent has been off-topic and about smoking and I believe that we have politely ENDED that conversation. I posted a question to the group some time ago about how vegetarians live with meat- eaters. Do you live with any meat-eaters? If you do, do you allow meat in the house? If not, would you? I personally was having some difficulty with this. I have not eaten meat in many years and currently live alone. I also do not currently have a relationship and was trying to decide if it would be fair of me, should I engage in a relationship with a meat-eater, to refuse to allow meat in the house in any shape or form. I have some friends who thought I was being unfair and that I should compromise and allow it. One of our members posted that it is akin to being a non-smoker and allowing people to smoke in your house. (I would NOT.) I've actually come to the conclusion that I have to stick to my guns on this one and find someone who shares my values and beliefs (or can at least respect them enough not to bring it into the house.) What do you think???? sheryl in albuquerque , " grrl4Chris " <journalfaery> wrote: > Hi, all. I just joined (last night), and I thought I should post an > introduction. Guest guest
Well, I was going to hold off on my two cents' worth until I had some clue what was going on, but that was an interesting question, so I'll jump on in. lol It's only two cents Canadian in my case, so that's what, a penny and a half to you? I do live with meat eaters: I'm spending the winter with my parents. And, although it's mildly hilarious to picture myself banning meat from the house, since they're putting me up (or " putting up with me " ) for the next eight months that really wouldn't be fair! Although, on the bright side: my mother (never a fast-food fan anyway) has just finished _Fast Food Nation_, and is feeling more than usually repelled by the meat industry, so vegetarian offerings are going over particularly well now. Seriously, though, they're open to eating most things (especially things someone else cooks!), so they're easy to live with...and although I'm not a great (or wildly enthusiastic) cook it's one thing I can do to repay their help right now. And it kind of resolves the whole food issue, because it's rapidly becoming " my " kitchen. My boyfriend (whom I obviously am not living with right now) is a meat eater...I don't object to that, but then: I'm not living with him. So it's easy to be tolerant right now. To be honest, if I could break him of his grab-something-horrid-on-the-way-to-work habit, I could live with him cooking almost anything at home. <sigh> For two cents I seem to have rambled at great length. Sorry. ~Carla PS I don't smoke, if that's of any interest. Or live with smokers, thank the gods. , " Sheryl " <ssarndt> wrote: > > Welcome to the group!! Guest guest
Hi all, I've been lurking for a little while and finally got the chance to say a fond hello to all. I believe someone was gathering stories, so here goes: I was lucky enough to have a lovely hippy teacher when I was 7 who gently broke vegetarianism and humanitarianism to a class of kids who'd never encountered either before. I'll admit I hadn't really considered the ramifications of what I'd been eating until then though I'd never been able to walk past a butchers shop unaffected. My parents didn't take me seriously at first and did their very best to thwart me (my father is Greek and even though all their best ancient philosophers were vegetarians the reaction from them now is " you don't eat meat? what's wrong with you?! " ). I admit I did have a lapse but when I was 10 and able to cook for myself I got fully back on track and have never looked back. In a way I think part of my willpower has been due to the adversity. It's taken some hard training but my mother at last understands the principles! I've even almost managed to wean her off any products that are tested on animals (almost) but the other side of my family still believe that as long as I don't KNOW something has goat-fat in it, it's alright to feed it to me. I think most of you on this list are in America, if you think your choices are limited there you want to try living in Europe! It's like being constantly punished. On a school trip to Spain, having been told I was vegetarian my host tried feeding me first chicken, then a ham sandwich and eventually a tin of sardines. And living with non-veggies, I have developed a bit of a hang-up about sharing any of my cooking pans with my parents though (yes, hang head in shame I moved back home " temporarily " ) as just knowing they've had meat or fish products on them makes me feel physically sick. Now I've read about the micro-particles I feel much more vindicated, I thought I was just being paranoid picturing them festering on my stuff. I have my own pans etc but it's difficult to keep my parents away from them. I did find an improvement however after I'd pointedly thrown out my pans 3 times and finally bought the cheapest, nastiest replacements I could find to make them less appealing. On the plus side, I do most of the shopping for us all and I refuse to buy meat so there isn't that much of it in the house most of the time. Glad to have found a group of people who " get it " , Alexia You may be interested to hear that a slang name for a Sea Cucumber is " Pr1ck of the Sea " because of their erm.....excretions, which to be honest, is enough of a reason to avoid them in the sea, let alone on land! , " Sheryl " <ssarndt> wrote: > > I posted a question > to the group some time ago about how vegetarians live with meat- > eaters. Guest guest
Welcome to the list; loved your stories. I have heard that " what's wrong with you " line many times before. I guess some people assume you have given up the eating of dead animals b/c you are ill or have some sort of medical problem/condition. In many cases I think it comforts them to keep us in some place where they don't have to confront any guilt they might have over their own dietary choice. ~ PT ~ True eloquence consists of saying all that should be said, and that only. ~ Francois de La Rochefoucald ~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~~~~~~~~> , " tentaclesofdoom " < tentaclesofdoom> wrote: > Hi all, > I've been lurking for a little while and finally got the chance to > say a fond hello to all. > > I believe someone was gathering stories, so here goes: > I was lucky enough to have a lovely hippy teacher when I was 7 who > gently broke vegetarianism and humanitarianism to a class of kids > who'd never encountered either before. > I'll admit I hadn't really considered the ramifications of what I'd > been eating until then though I'd never been able to walk past a > butchers shop unaffected. > > My parents didn't take me seriously at first and did their very best > to thwart me (my father is Greek and even though all their best > ancient philosophers were vegetarians the reaction from them now > is " you don't eat meat? what's wrong with you?!
