For the new members who asked about how to eat vegan and existing

members who care:

I just tried Lightlife's " Smoky Tempeh Strips " which are advertised

as a bacon substitute. I loved them! I hate to admit this, but

back in my meat-eating days, i really liked bacon. Today and since

having become veg, I can't stand the smell of it!!! For some reason

I decided to pick these up at the store and luckily for me, the

texture is different enough from real bacon so that I know I'm

eating tempeh and the smoky flavor is very bacon-like. I ate them

on a sandwich of rye bread, ketchup, mustard, tomato, sauerkraut and

a bit of cheese (need to kick this habit). I fried the strips in

some olive oil. They did not take long at all to fry. I'll bet you

could even bake them! I like them and recommend them!!

I also purchased some of the " Tofurkey " slices. They are good too!

I bought the kind with pepper in them. For those people new to the

Veg world, purchasing meat substitutes is a great way to make the

transition. I was never fond of them in the past, but am just now

starting to enjoy some of them.

Yves brand " veggie ground round " in the refrigerator section is a

really great ground beef alternative. I have used in in a

Shepherd's pie (anyone want the recipe?) and also in a tortilla pie

thing and in some type of hamburger-helper type boxed mix. I could

eat it in the shepherd's pie and the tortilla pie, but I could not

eat that boxed mix stuff! That fake meat was wayyyyy too real and

in too large of a quantity for me in that recipe! It wasn't for me,

but I'm sure someone who wants a good meat substitute would love

it!

Also, I convinced my favorite health food store to buy a supply

of " Follow Your Heart " vegan cheese and intend to try it out when

they get it in! I can't wait!!!

This particular store also carries Tofutti brand stuff. I tried

their vegan sour cream, which I thought was an excellent sour cream

alternative and their vegan cream cheeses, which have effectively

converted me!! Now I just need some regular cheese alternative and

I'll be all set!

I used to really like bacon and ham as well. I have no

shame in admitting it. I guess I mostly enjoyed the

smokey flavor. I always loathed the fat and grisss. *blech*

I loved it when I became a vegetarian and discovered veggie

bacon alternatives, like morning star farms brand.

It isn't vegan, so it is nice of you to post this review of a

vegan product. I will have to keep a lookout for those smokey

tempeh strips.

I need to get proactive and ask the store clerks to carry some

of these toferky items. I mean I live in Oregon and the company

that manufactures toferky is in Hood, Oregon, so it isn't like it

would be hard for them to get them. *lol*

the smoky tempeh strips never seem to stay in one piece when i get them out

of the package; i always end up with smoky tempeh chunks instead. i do love

smart bacon (it's either made by yves or lightlife, i forget which). it's a

great vegan bacon substitute, and stays in one piece, too! makes a fine blt

sammitch.

I agree on the blt. Haven't tried the smoky tempeh though.

Smart Bacon is Lightlife.

Just had one tonight.

I loooooove the Smart Deli " Turkey " slices - can't remember if they

actually taste like turkey, but I find they make a great lunch.

My favorite " healthy winter meal " is to use 3 slices of Smart Turkey,

tomato slices, baby spinach leaves, and a slice of pickle or two,

sandwiched between rye bread. Add a bowl of veggie soup and you've

got a wicked low-cal, low-fat, high vitamin, yum fest.

Also good is the Smart ham - try it on an english muffin w/ some soy

cheese (American or Cheddar works well) and throw it in a toaster

oven. Great way to get protein, too!
