Reducing carbohydrates in favor of proteins is not a healthy approach.

Just because a doctor advises something does not make it worthwhile advice.

I'd get a few other opinions, especially from people who haven't been

trained by the medical establishment.

If I can jump into the ring ... While the bandwagon right now is to

reduce carbs a la Atkins, that definitely puts a lot of stress on

your kidneys and liver. And depending on what kind of proteins

you're eating, you might be adding up the cholesteral too.

It's important also to make sure your diet is tailored to your

lifestyle. Carbs are your body's best source of fuel, so drastically

reducing them is not always a great idea. Especially if you're active

(cycling, running, etc.)

The best bet is to pay attention to 1) your lifestyle 2) what your

body craves 3) weight gain/loss (and your accompanying goals) and

adjust your diet accordingly. But a diet high in fresh fruit/veg,

complex fiber and lean protein is always a good bet.

I agree - not so much because the doctors have been mis-trained, but

because they are *un*trained in matters of nutrition. They carry the

same prejudices as the rest of the world when it comes to nutrition. -

the same wrong 'information' and therefore offer, from a position of

authority, the same poor advice. (I am not arguing with the previous

comment ;=), in full below, just reinforcing it.)

several years back I was talkin to my doctor and told her " well maybe

I would lose weight better if I went back to eating meat since beans

automatically have alot of carbs in them " and the thing she said

is " carbs are not bad in fact you need carbs to live its the fat that

is bad " so not all doctors are meatheads but most are lol stay cool,

Limitations on any of the macronutrients (i.e., fat, protein, and carbs) are

only necessary when one has a health concern complicated by foods of that

particular group. A healthy body needs them all to remain healthy. The

only question to meaningfully be debated is what combination of the three is

necessary or optimal, and that's where all the disagreement is found.

Generally speaking, beans are about half protein and half carbs, and

depending on your diet concerns, this combination has both pluses and

negatives.

I must agree.. also, doctors just aren't trained well in research

methods. they frequently make errors that even someone who has had an

elementary research methods class would find laughable. I

occassionally have to read research from psychiatric journals. One

study about omega 3's reducing effects on violence changed three

variables in the experimental group (cognitive stimulation, exercise,

and high fish diet) and then the researcher just claimed from these

results that the majority of the reduction in violence was due to the

fish, not the exercise or extra attention.

it really irks me how MDs are treated like experts of mental health

and nutrition when they get almost no training in these areas. this

doesn't mean all doctors are incompetent, but to be competent would

require them to read research outside of the medical field on their

own time, and most doctors are far too busy raking in the money to do

this.
