Marinating/cost of tofu

Here in Ohio I pay 89 cents for a 12.3 oz. box of Mori-Nu. Compare

that to ground beef, even the cheap stuff.

Grains and beans are generally cheap.

From my own experience the " fake meats " /hamburgers/seitan etc can be

somewhat expensive. Possibly better to learn to make your own. The

most expensive are some of the " unusual " ingredients, like perhaps

miso. some of the soy products are also quite a rip off, like soy

mayonnaise - better to learn to make your own where possible. Also

learn where to shop. Some of these big-chain grocery stores are real

rip-offs! (the 89 cents box of tofu is 1.59 at the local big-chain)

Might be better to seek a food-coop or natural foods store.

good luck in your new lifestyle. a gradual change is usually best.

I agree about the fake meats being expensive. It is convenience food and non-veggie convenience food is expensive too. Mori-Nu tofu is definately more expensive here but I don't use it that often. I really like chickpea (garbanzo bean) patties and so do the kids!! Yay!! I have made various other kinds that were yummy too. Right now we are eating more of the "fake meat" because the baby doesn't give me a lot of time to cook. I made a yummy supper last night of bulger pilaf that I threw 2 cups of frozen oriental veggies into. I did portobello mushroom slices sauted in olive oil with balsamic vinegar and salt and pepper. I thought the kids wouldn't want them because they don't eat regular mushrooms, well they loved them!! DARN!!! LOL They are expensive and it means less for me!! LOL

Namaste Cheryll,

Where do you shop??? I live in Columbus, where the price at the (admittedly big-chain supermarket) stores I've seen is about double that.

I buy the tofu and most other " vegetarian " items at a little natural

foods market here called Seven Grains. They sell alot of bulk foods

organic foods and produce items. That same box of tofu is $1.59 at

Giant Eagle!

At my grocery store it ranges from 1.89-2.19 for a block of tofu. At

the Korean grocery near me it is only 1.50 for 3 blocks are something

like that. I buy it by the pound- it comes in a huge bucket.
