Guest guest
does anyone want to offer a suggestion for the best-tasting (best-textured, etc.) vegetarian hot dog? i found a day care provider who's willing to go along with my vegetarian child rearing plans, but she wanted to know whether i could find " fake hot dogs " for my kid. it's been so long since i became a vegetarian, that i don't even want to try the fake stuff, but i have no problem getting them for my kids -- once the kids get here:-) anyhow, any suggestions regarding the best " fake " hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. would be very much appreciated. thanks! rita " Home is what catches you when you fall -- and we all fall. Guest guest
I find anything by Morningstar is usually a pretty good fake (except their chicken). My daughter prefers Morningstar's Better than Burger over normal hamburgers. When her friends come over, I make Better than Burgers for all of them and just throw ketchup and a slice of cheese on the burgers. The kids take seconds so I would say they are acceptable. Morningstar's hotdogs are pretty good if prepared the way the directions suggest. Cooking them like they are normal hotdogs changes the taste and texture. Yveves (sp?) also sells a number of fakes but they do not taste anything like the real thing to me. In a neighborhood kid taste taste, no one would take a second slice of any of their imitation luncheon meats or pepperoni slices. Both Morningstar and Yveves make a meat crumble imitation that tastes fine in chili, spaghetti, sloppy joe sandwiches, or any other recipe calling for browned ground beef. Guest guest
Rita, I have found that almost everything made by Morningstar Farms tastes good. I suggest that you try them first. Good luck! Guest guest
Try soy dogs-there are several varieties. They taste best fried in a bit of olive oil or pam and topped with relish or salsa. reeeeta wrote: does anyone want to offer a suggestion for the best-tasting(best-textured, etc.) vegetarian hot dog? i found a day care providerwho's willing to go along with my vegetarian child rearing plans, but shewanted to know whether i could find "fake hot dogs" for my kid. it'sbeen so long since i became a vegetarian, that i don't even want to trythe fake stuff, but i have no problem getting them for my kids -- oncethe kids get here:-) anyhow, any suggestions regarding the best "fake"hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. would be very much appreciated. thanks! rita"Home is what catches you when you fall -- and we all fall."contact owner: -owner Mail list: Delivered-mailing list List-Un: - no flaming arguing or denigration of others allowedcontact owner with complaints regarding posting/list or anything else. Guest guest
I'd have to second the Morningstar brand. My kids ate them several times before my dh let it slip that they weren't the same thing they used to eat. They still like them -- they just hadn't realized what they were eating. I do like the Yves (sp?) turkey and bologna slices on sandwiches. I add a little mustard and veggie cheese with lettuce and tomato and go. My kids do okay with them. But none of my guys like the crumbles -- they'd rather have the items without the beef than have the crumbles. Even in spaghetti sauces where I thought the spices would cover any difference. I haven't tried a bad veggie burger yet...lol. BUT my children love the chicken nuggets and patties too. Guest guest
I love the crumbles! When i want to eat something thats quick and easy to make, I make taco salad using the crumbles. My carnivorous friends have told me that they even like it better than taco salad with beef. I put a serving worth of crumbles(put as much is good for you) into a bowl. Then I microwave it for about 1:45. Then i take it out crush up some tortilla chips and add them to the bowl. Then i throw a small amount of veggie cheese(put the kind of cheese you like) into the bowl. Then i pour a good amount of hot sauce on it. Then i stir it up. Then i put it back in the microwave for 25 seconds. Then i eat it. :>) Its not exactly gourmet vegetarian dining. But its darn tasty. --Tim
Guest guest
Hi Shara, I like the " gimme lean " burger in tubes for a gravy base. There has been controversy over eating too much soy products... I raised three veggie kids to adults (oldest nearly 25) and tryed to balance things a bit... too much of a good thing may not be. Some are made with wheat gluten instead. Dick Van Dyke did adds saying " Read the label, set a better table " and I heed this... I like the Yves pepperoni with balonie. I sometimes use quick oats, nutritional yeast, oil, water and flavors to blend with left over rice for yummy grain burgers (baked). Neither my sons or I have ever craved animal flesh but like the flavors of new products. Its getting easier to have a healthier diet. :-) David Star > MessageI'd have to second the Morningstar brand. Guest guest
I also vote for the Morningstar dogs. My 4-yr old son loves them. He also likes the Morningstar Chik Nuggets. As for the veggie burgers, I haven't found any yet that he likes. He and his dad also like Worthington " Wham " (fake ham) and Corned Beef the best, as far as fake lunch meat products. Neither of them like Yves or Lightlife products. cheryll

Guest guest
my favorites are yves veggie dogs (jumbo) & boca burger (all american classic)... both are good via stove-top, microwave or on bbq (brush w/ olive oil first)... my meat-eating teenage boys like them from time-2-time too... having been a meat-eater for my first twenty and a veggie for the last twenty years, it's no longer about " fake " it's about nutrition via taste and texture - i have no idea what the " real " stuff tastes like anymore enjoy - mike --- reeeeta wrote: > does anyone want to offer a suggestion for the > best-tasting > (best-textured, etc.) vegetarian hot dog? i found a > day care provider > who's willing to go along with my vegetarian child > rearing plans, but she > wanted to know whether i could find " fake hot dogs " > for my kid. it's > been so long since i became a vegetarian, that i > don't even want to try > the fake stuff, but i have no problem getting them > for my kids -- once > the kids get here:-) anyhow, any suggestions > regarding the best " fake " > hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. would be very much > appreciated. thanks! rita > > > > " Home is what catches you when you fall -- and we > all fall. I vote for the Morningstar hotdogs. I'm not vegetarian but I'll eat them no probs. We also boil them like regular dogs and I don't have a problem eating them that way either. The bf (who *is* vegetarian) really likes the corndogs too. As mentioned, Morningstar has excellent foods. I'll eat their spicy blackbean burgers any day!!! We also reg. eat their sausages (links or patties), crumbles and 'chicken' wings. We weren't so fond of the bacon. The bf really likes all their veggie burgers. Guest guest
I guess you probably got alot of advice, but I will chime in as well. Morningstar here as well. I think the grillers are great. I also like the black bean patties alot, and the fake bacon goes great on top of the grillers. I vote no thank you on the corndogs.
