Guest guest
I just wanted to ask some advice about cholesterol. I figured having been raised a vegetarian would eliminate any problems with high cholesterol but boy was I wrong. I guess I'm genetically likely to have high cholesterol, heart problems on both sides of my family, but for some reason never thought I'd have to worry about it. I got tested at a health fair at my college just for curiousity sake and I'm moderately high at age 21. I love my butter and have been eating eggs for protein cause they are quick and easy and dried beans just seem to take too long in my busy schedule. So obviously I have to make a diet change but I also have to maintain a high salt diet for my blood pressure/syncope problem. I have to admit I'm a junk food junky when it comes to potato chips and french fries but health is more important so I'm set to change. If anybody has any recommendations I'm all ears. Also I guess I just wanted to say 'heads-up' to high cholesterol even though I'm sure you guys eat a lot healthier than I do. Thanks again! ~Elizabeth
Guest guest
Elizabeth, I too am a chip-o-holic, LOL. The only suggestion I have, is too watch the dairy products. My Mom eats dairy products (ice cream, milk, cheese, cheese and cheese) in substitution of meat, it seems. I try to remind her that doing away with meat is a great plus for the health but all that dairy has a lot of cholesterol. Take care, Shawn. Guest guest
Thanks Shawn, That's definitely one of my bad eating habits...who can resist I nice tasty slice of cheese melted over just about any dish. I guess I better learn how to or find something to substitute it. Thanks for the advice. ~Elizabeth >"MatriXeno ." > > >Re: Cholesterol problem >Wed, 23 Oct 2002 19:54:24 -0500 > >Elizabeth, I too am a chip-o-holic, LOL. Guest guest
I just had to reply, because I also had a cholesterol problem. I've managed to lick it thru dietary changes. Yes...cheese and dairy are difficult to give up. May I suggest soy cheese? Yes...most brands DO contain some milk products, added so they will melt well, BUT they DO NOT contain cholesterol, and are MUCH less greasy. As for butter, have you tried some of the different soy-based spreads? Or olive-oil based? Or canola... Remember if it is MADE FROM ANIMAL PRODUCTS then generally IT HAS CHOLESTEROL and is ADDING EXCESS CHOLESTEROL TO YOUR DIET. There are dietary supplements and foods which can help lower cholesterol naturally. One is soluable fiber, obtained by eating grain/cereal products, like oatmeal, oat bran. Look for the amount of soluable fiber on the Nutrition label on the box. Another is pectin. Pectin is found in fruits. Apples are especially good. (Remember the old saying about " an apple a day... " ) Another is a good B-vitamin supplement, in particular the niacin in it. Niacin lowers cholesterol...however be careful. Don't overdo it. Too much can make your face flushed, make you feel headachey... Consult with a doctor if you're not sure how much is too much. Check out the library for books on lowering cholesterol naturally. Lastly is exercise. Try to get some every day (Oh, it's so hard, i know...) and watch your total fat intake as a whole. Don't give up those yummy potato chips. Just 1) Opt for ones that are baked, or at least fried in a healthy (high LDL/monounsaturated fat) oil, and 2) EAT LESS of them. Educate yourself as to which oils help your HDL and lower your LDL, and try to stick with them. I managed to lick my problem in this way. cheryll
