Re: Re: My Introduction- To PT

Hi PT- At the risk of being nosey....<<I am a vegetarian, but my

husband and children are not.>>

I am just curious as to how old your children are and is being a

vegetarian something you have tried to encourage with them or do you let

them

make their own decisions in regard to this??

With kindness,

Beth

My daughter is 12 and my son is 9. My daughter is more inclined to eat

vegetarian foods, but for some reason my son is totally meat and potatoes;

even though he doesn't get it much around here. *lol*

He often asks me why I don't like meat. I tell him that I never did like the

taste

(of red meat), texture, or knowing that it was an animal I was eating. Chicken I

liked, and hamburger I could sometimes tolerate, but when weighed against

my ethical beliefs and thoughts, I felt eating that was just wrong for me.

Being a vegetarian just feels right and very natural.

I dont pressure them b/c like other things, I want them to make their own

choices. If it was just me starting all over, I probably would have maybe

raised them vegetarian, but I think at one point I would allow them to decide

for themselves. Hopefully I am providing them with a good example of

tolerance and peace, so when they are grown into adults and making their

own ethical choices, they will have something different to consider.

You see PT...<<If it was just me starting all over, I probably would have maybe raised them vegetarian>> you could be like me at my age and have a new born that you get to "correct" all those mistakes you made the first go around!! BIG grin! (Thats what I tell my 11 and 13 year old girls all the time and they tell my when their brother is old enough they will make him aware I am brain washing him to conform to my wishes and desires! LOL) Seriously- I certainly don't want my girls to feel that they are not there own people with their own tastes, but I have debated if I should do more to make them aware of what they are actually eating. You know...the logistics of it being more than a pretty package in the meat department. I do not eat meat for health issues (watching my Dad die of cancer made me VERY paranoid!) and for personal reasons in regard to my faith in my beliefs and trying to be more compassionate. I always wrestle with which one, as a parent,is more responsible and which one is more of a dictatorship! LOL I can't and would not push my beliefs on them but feel that for their health they should cut back on it more. As for my husband...he is a fishing, meat and potatoes loving boy. He loves my cooking and will eat vegetarian dishes without a problem, but if he is out or fixing dinner himself than he gets what he wants. I do fix him meat dishes and my mother fixes dinner for us often and I would never hurt her feelings to decline her meals. Which is the next issue someone else mentioned...if I am a vegetarian for compassionate reason...how much of a hypocrite am I when I prepare chicken and beef dishes for my family?? Sigh...oh well. The guilt could go on and on. ~*~Yes, indeed. I make sure they know the facts behind the meat they eat.

They truely don't eat very much in my house.

~*~ Being compassionate to animals also means we need to be

compassionate to ourselves and others around us; especially the ones we

hold dear like family members. My tolerance and acceptance of their personal

lifestyle choice is one way I resolve the guilt issues. You sound like a very

kind person with a big heart. We should never feel guilty ever for doing

something out of love. Namaste
