Guest guest
Hello~ My name is Angela and I am new to the list and also new to finding out about the veggie diet. I work at a seventh day Adventist hospital and they serve the meat substitutes. I've tried them and they give me gas. Some days bad stomach pains. A friend thats already a vegetarian says the soy does give some people gas. I've asked her and now I'll ask all of you... 1) Will my stomach adapt? Or, if I become a vegetarian do I just need to know that I will not be able to eat the meat substitutes? 2) Do all vegetarians loose weight? I've been told that a lot of the meat substitutes are high in fat. Is this so? Thanks! Angela
Guest guest
Well, don't know about the gas, (would beano help?), but I know several rather fat (obese) vegetarians. The fat in plant foods has just as many calories as in other sources---so, things like peanut butter (or any nut butter) and vegetable oils, (and yes even tofu) eaten in large enough quantity will probably help you gain weight. Foods like broccoli, tomatoes, etc. will not. Sugar (including honey, fructose, and many others) and refined flour products will probably contribute to weight grain. Less refined stuff (whole wheat type stuff) may be less fat enhancing---though if you can eat enough of it, you could probably still gain weight. My 2 cents. -george , " Angela " <astreit@k...> wrote: > Hello~ > > My name is Angela and I am new to the list and also new to finding out > about the veggie diet. It is always nice to " see " new " faces " here. > 1) Will my stomach adapt? You could try a product like Beano, or see if there are other meat-like alternative product that don't give you gas. As far as adapting, I don't know. I pretty much listen to my body (no pun intended there hehehe), and if it complains about something I've eaten, I listen and don't push it. > 2) Do all vegetarians loose weight? Basically, weight gain comes from eating too many more calories than your body burns, so anyone, no matter their diet can get chubby if they don't watch it. Many new vegetarians gain weight because everything just tastes so good. *lol* I know in my new enthusiasm that I did. Once I noticed it, I became more careful and knowledgeable about portion size. I'm not skinny, but I am not too fat, and try to maintain a health weight. It is a challenge we all face more as we get older and/or our metabolisms slow down a bit. As far as there being more fat in meat substitutes all I can say is not the brands I use. Pound for pound they contain way less fat than the meat they replace, and are also low in cholesterol as a rule. Just read your labels. ( a vegetarian mantra) BTW, I just looked at my Yves brand " ham " slices and they contain zero fat grams; thats zero, zip, nada. I have no idea how much fat is in a slice of pig, but I betcha it is more. *lol* ~ P_T ~ /

Dear Angela, I'm vegetarian since 1988, and I've had weight ups and downs since 1972, so I'm in a position to know that it's not vegetarianism or meat-eating alone that makes you fat. Vegetarian or not vegetarian, if you eat lots of starches and sweets and fats you'll gain weight. Starches as in bread and pasta, sweets - oh well, you know what that is!- and fats as in dairy. Usually vegetarians shed weight when they don't replace the meat with more dairy, otherwise they may well gain. Meat replacement things are usually made from soy products, which contain far less fat than even the leaner meat. On the other hand, vegans are more certainly thinner than us lacto-ovo, because they skip the fat in the dairy and also even the sweets they may eat, have sugar but minimum fat. Remember to use more vegetables, not more dairy, so that you stay healthy and fit.
