Guest guest
Hey everyone. I'm switching to some meat substitutes to lose weight. I just bought some Boca Burgers " flame grilled " burgers yesterday and LOVED 'EM! They were awesome. But when I initially went to buy them, I wasn't sure what brand to buy, so I just got lucky. I also purchased some Lightlife, " Smart Deli Ham, " ugh...that stuff is rough to eat. I'm wondering if you guys can just talk about some of your favorite pre-packaged meat substitutes. I love mushrooms already, so I really don't need to know about those. I'm specifically interested in the meatless substitutes like Boca, Morningstar, etc. Please also tell how much like the " real thing " they taste, since that's what I know and what I'd be comparing it to tastewise. I'm thinking of buying the meatless ground " beef. " Have any of you had it? Do you like it? Which brand is the best? Any help you can offer would be great. Thanks! Guest guest
The boca ground beef is ok, but tastes kind of nutty and makes spaghetti sauce taste weird... Plain old tofu is better! Then you can add your own seasonings... also, " Gimme lean " has a pretty good textured product that acts " raw " so you can mold it into " Beanballs " or " Beanloaf " ... I don't know how one would get the tofu to do that... -dawn , " neutralparty <dennisfan> " <dennisfan> wrote: > Hey everyone. I'm switching to some meat substitutes to lose > weight. Guest guest
I prefer most Morningstar stuff--grillers, soy dogs, etc. I dislike boca burgers--they taste slimy to me but haven't actually had any for a long time. Chick n pot pie by morningstar is rather addictive so I never read the label on it ;-). The soy dogs taste better with lots of toppings (pickles, sauerkraut, etc.) If you take grillers to cook-outs, take extras--meat eaters like them, too. Guest guest
My son LOVES these. I'd much rather have my four year old eat these than the real deal. I think it's great that there are convenience foods like these for us. Sometimes we want something junkish - what's the harm every once in a while? Other times we have no choice but to eat processed foods when cooking or preparing a real meal is out of the question. Oh, and my boy really loves the veggie lunchables. I'm >thinking of buying the meatless ground " beef. " Have any of you had >it? Do you like it? Which brand is the best? I like the Dixie Diner Beef (Not!) brand. They come dried and keep a long time--not that they last long in my house. I like the granulated hamburger substitute and prefer it over all other brands. The " strips " are also very good and I use them in stir-frys, barbecued or as fajitas. (I jokingly refer to them as the " cat food version and the dog food version " because, being dried, that's what they sort of look like.) Morning Star farms hamburger-oid is also very good and you can get that in almost any grocery store. My favorite lunch " meat " is Yves " turkey " slices. They don't taste like turkey, but they taste good. I like the Boca beef patties and the Morning Star Grillers if I'm going to have hamburgers, but generally don't eat either without a lot of condiments. I *really* like Boca's smoked sausage (the ones that look like bratworst) and their new sausage crumbles are excellent and wonderful in scrambled eggs or in " sausage " gravy (I'm southern. Sausage gravy is important!). Boca's breakfast sausages all suck as do all those made by Morning Star. All flavors of Boca's grilled " chicken " are downright nasty. Morning Star's chicken nuggets are fair, but a little mealy. All frozen hot dogs taste (to me) like the stuff they make car tires out of. My favorite hot dog is Loma Linda brand Linkettes. They come in a can and don't freeze well, two drawbacks. I only use them when I have someone to help me eat them. They taste pretty good, so that's not hard. Does any of the above taste a lot like meat? Search me. I find that after a while your tongue sort of " forgets " what meat tastes like. My first taste of Morning Star's griller got me all paranoid and I read the entire list of ingredients before I was sure I hadn't been fooled while everyone else was assuring me that it really didn't taste all that much like hamburger to them. I suggest you try everything and just trash anything that doesn't taste good. Guest guest
Hi, and welcome to the group. Lets see, I like Yves brand ground round for using as a ground beef substitute in recipes. I also like Yves deli sliced 'ham', but I haven't tried any others. I really like Morning Star Farms brand tomato-basil pizza burgers; they make great lunch sandwiches. I recently had some spicey black bean burger (made by someone, not sure who, sorry), but they were awesome. I had it out at a subshop and have yet to find them in boxed packages in my local stores, but I am keeping an eye out for them. Have fun trying all the things out there. Matters of taste are so individual that what appeals to me may not taste good to you, but I hope I have been able to give you some ideas. Guest guest
I forgot a few of my favorites... Morning star beef crumbles - great in tacos Garden Burger Crispy Nuggets - Not chicken and not intended to be. They are made from brown rice, mozarella cheese, garlic, basil and a tomato sauce. Wonderful. Light Life Taco/Burrito Filling - Just awsome Boca Bratwurst - Great color and texture Boca Italian Sausage - Diced and put in spaghetti sauce. No one could tell. Hope this helps. It has been a great thread to see what everyone else is enjoying or not. Guest guest
I'm wondering if anyone has found my favorite comfort food? We called it something else in our vernacular but many may know it as " Creamed Chipped Beef On Toast. " (ok, aka s**t on a shingle!) I am wondering specifically for something to simulate the thin sliced beef that is made by Buddig, among others. Thanks in advance! -dawn

Any former meat- eaters who have found a comparable substitute for hotdogs? Hi, Yes, do you have a Kroegers Grocery Story or Foods Co as it's called here? They have a product by Worthington called Superlinks. (Some health food stores carry this stuff too, but talk about outrageous prices!) With a superlink, you can bake, boil, fry, bbq, microwave, roast, maybe eat raw, though I never liked my hot dogs that way, and they taste great. They're wonderful in the oven with some granulated garlic on them and bake them just until the garlic starts to turn black. (Not necessary, (the garlic), but it's great anyway. The bad news is that they are 3.99 for a can of 8; at least they are here. The best thing is if you have an Adventist Book Center (ABC) around nearby and get on their caselot foodsale list. Then twice a year you can get this stuff a lot cheaper. Now if you want the spicy beef hotdog taste, the best I've found is the Worthington product called Leannies. It's frozen and they're thinner than the superlink, the texture is a bit chewy too, but they have that spicy beef taste like the footlong beef hotdogs you can find in some of the Mom and Pop type drive-ins. A lot of veggies I know swear by the Vegalinks (also in a can from Worthington), but they are seriously in need of some salt and they're not as versatile as the Superlinks. IMHO. (Also, for the person who said Morningstar Farm Chicken Nuggets were okay, but not good, is right on the mark. The funny thing is they tasted relatively decent until they new and improved them, then they were gross. Again, if you can find an ABC near you or within driving distance, they have an ?in-house? brand by Loma Linda called Chick Nuggets. Now those, we can't keep in the house. Everybody loves them. Hope this helps, Pam
Guest guest
I have tried out a few more of you all's suggestions and just thought I'd give an update... 1. The Morningstar corndogs really freaked me out because you can't really tell the difference! Hehehe...I think it's great. 2. I have decided that the soy burgers are good enough that I will not use regular ground beef anymore. No need to. I've tried the Morninstar Prime Grillers and the Boca Burger Flame Grilled and they are both tasty. 3. I tried Quorn brand breaded " chicken " cutlets with garlic and herb, and OH MY!!! These were some tasty things! If you haven't tried them, I suggest you do! Not bad for a chicken knock-off! 4. I tasted Seitan and it was pretty good. Now I just have to learn to cook with it. The recipe I had came from a deli. They have some in a container that I can buy and cook with, but I'm not sure what to do with it. The sauce they used was pretty heavy, so I wonder if it'll taste as good with less/no sauce. 5. I'm still searching for a good veggie hotdog, but it's expensive to buy this stuff and throw it out if it tastes bad. Any former meat- eaters who have found a comparable substitute for hotdogs? Guest guest
Hi, I use the Morningstar Hot Dogs they are great, where I buy them they are right in with the other Morningstar Products in the freezer, I even got my husband to eat them and he loves the Morningstar Hotdogs. We eat the Morningstar Prime Grillers, the Tomato and Basil, Black Bean Burgers and I use tehir TVP in cooking spagetti sauce, etc. Autumn "neutralparty <dennisfan" <dennisfan wrote: I have tried out a few more of you all's suggestions and just thought I'd give an update...5. Guest guest
Thanks for the info. I'm in the same boat. I'm doing the taste tests. I haven't got as far as you though. I did try the Boca sausage links and was not very thrilled. I'm going to try the Morning Star next. Did you find the Quorn where the other subs were? I've heard these were good and want to try some. My other next adventure is to try TVP in place of my meats. It has to be able to fool DH. This will be a challenge because I'm not creative and I usually keep it real simple. No gourmet here by any means of the imagination. Robin in NC
Guest guest
I don't think the hotdog issue is about the taste, since they have pretty much got that down. In my house it is all about the texture of what you are trying to chew. For texture, I have found that Smart Dogs by Lightlife foods (in the produce section at Shop 'n Save)--you just really gotta put some cheese and chili on that bad boy to get any hot dog down! -dawn , Autumn <ck72198> wrote: > > Hi, I use the Morningstar Hot Dogs they are great, where I buy them they are right in with the other Morningstar Products in the freezer, I even got my husband to eat them and he loves the Morningstar Hotdogs. I'm not sure they carry them normally because they were in a little freezer like they might have been a special. I gotta go back and get some more before they're out. I've just spent a fortune on this stuff as of late. My husband has been eating the burgers with me and I wasn't really expecting him to like this stuff, so we are going through it pretty quick.
